- Computer and Internet Acceptable Use Policy
Computer access is available to employees, teachers and students of the SchneeLearningCenter. The Internet provides access to vast, diverse and unique resources to employees, teachers and students in pursuit of educational excellence.
The SchneeLearningCenter has taken precautions to restrict access to controversial materials. However, it is impossible to control all materials; an industrious user may discover controversial information. SchneeLearningCenter firmly believes that the valuable information and interaction available on the Internet far outweighs the possibility that users may procure material that is not consistent with the educational goals of the school.
The operation of the network relies on the proper conduct of the end users that must adhere to strict guidelines. The guidelines are provided so that employees and students are aware of the responsibility of using computers and the Internet. This requires efficient, ethical and legal utilization of the network resources.
Guidelines
□Privileges – The use of the computers and the Internet is a privilege—not a right—and inappropriate use will result in cancellation of these privileges and appropriate disciplinary measures.
□Privacy – Network storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Technology Coordinators may review communications to maintain system integrity and to insure those employees and students are using the system responsibly.
□Storagecapacity – Users are expected to remain within allocated disk space and delete material which takes up excessive storage space. Student H drives will be emptied at the end of each school year and students wanting to save any files should store them on diskettes at the end of the year.
□Illegalcopying – Employees and students should never download or install any commercial software, shareware or free ware onto network drives or disks, unless they have written permission from the Technology Coordinator. Employees and students should not send or receive copyrighted materials in violation of US copyright law; nor should employees or students copy other people’s work, login to other people’s work, login to other people’s accounts or access other people’s files unless deemed necessary by the Technology Coordinator.
□Inappropriatematerialsorlanguage – profane, abusive or impolite language should not be used to communicate nor should materials be accessed which are not in line with the rules of school behavior as written in the Schnee Learning Center Student Code of Conduct. A good rule to follow is never view, send or access materials, which you would not want your teachers and parents to see. Should students encounter such material by accident, they should report it to their teacher immediately. The Schnee Learning Center Director’s discretion determines what materials may violate these standards.
□Reliability – SchneeLearningCenter specifically denies any responsibility for the accuracy or quality of information obtained through the Internet.
□Security – Security of any computer system is a high priority. If an employee or student can identify a security problem on the Internet, the Technology Coordinator should be notified immediately. Do not demonstrate the problem to other users. Any users identified as a security risk may be denied access by the SchneeLearningCenter.
□Vandalism – Vandalism or harassment will result in the cancellation of privileges. Vandalism is any attempt to harm or destroy hardware, data of another user, the Internet or the network that is connected to the SchneeLearningCenter. This includes, but is not limited to the uploading or creation of computer viruses. Harassment is the persistent annoyance of another user, or the interference of another user’s work. Restitution for damages will be assessed at the current replacement value of the hardware.
□Educational and Work Use – The computers are for educational and work use only. Playing of games, instant messaging, sending network messages, use of MySpace.com, accessing sites using a proxy server or remote connection, chat rooms and purchasing items on the Internet are not educational uses. At this time email is not available to students.
□Electronic Email – The Board retains the right to access and review all electronic and voice mail, computer files, data bases, and any other electronic transmissions contained in or used in conjunction with the Board’s computer system, telephone system, electronic mail system, and voice mail system. Staff members should have no expectation that any information contained on such system is confidential and private.
□Additional Guidelines – Additional guidelines will be developed from time to time as conditions warrant. Users will be expected to comply with any new guidelines.
□Release – In consideration for the privilege of using the Schnee Learning Center’s Computer Network, every account user releases the Schnee Learning Center, its operators and administrators from any and all claims of any nature arising from his/her use, or inability to use the Schnee Learning Center’s Computer Network.
