Lay Health Promoters Minutes
August 4, 2009
Present: Jan Wolfe, Peter Loach, Dela Alexander, Maritza Gomez, Olga Castillo, Aaron Miller
A. Regional Networking
· Review of July 20th meeting with Richmond and Harrisonburg HP groups at UVA Cancer Center
· Workshop to be held in the spring for about 100 HPs from Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Richmond, possibly to be held in Charlottesville, location and exact date TBD
· Next planning meeting: Oct. 19th at 1:30pm, UVA Cancer Center (conference call with Richmond and Harrisonburg HP organizers to finalize workshop ideas)
· Survey to be sent out to HPs in Charlottesville, Richmond and Harrisonburg to determine interest, topic ideas, and day of the week for the workshop (Saturday vs. Sunday)
B. Health promoter classes
· Allison Garrison and Peggy Paviour have been working on finishing the curriculum revisions, should be done in the coming week to send finalized curriculum to the printer
· Articles advertising/recruiting for upcoming HP classes in Nuevas Raíces and The Daily Progress
· Jan Wolfe to make flyers for Olga Castillo and Maritza Gomez to post in local stores advertising classes
· Discussion of how to deal with sensitive information and disclosures through the course of HP classes – Aaron Miller, Maritza Gomez and Olga Castillo to give presentation on the first class about confidentiality of the group (and as a HP), boundaries, consent forms, and the role of the HP. There will also be a discussion with each presenter beforehand to discuss the possibility of disclosures
· Maritza Gomez to talk with a local psychiatrist interested in presenting and also with a chef to come to the monthly HP meeting to give healthy recipe ideas
· Graduation night to possibly include dance class (as a form of exercise) – Maritza Gomez to coordinate with local dance instructors to determine if they would be interested in giving the class
C. Financial Update
· Newest budget update – letter given to Peter Loach asking Creciendo Juntos for remaining funds
· Jan Wolfe and Peggy Paviour to meet at 11am with PVCC and ESL to talk about Mary Babcock Foundation grant to have HP classes as a stepping stone for further career development – ideas were brought up about program expansion and building outside support
D. Migrant camp screenings update
· July 21st – 6 health promoters saw 25 workers
· August 3rd – 5 health promoters saw 13 workers
