February 28…..PROJECT DUE: 3/7

Creative Writing & Visual Project

In order to understand poetry, it’s important to try writing it. For this project, you’ll pick one of three writing assignments and pair your work with a visual component. Both parts are due next Monday, March 7.

Part I: Writing Assignment Options (pick one!)

1. A Found poem: Found Poetry is created from “found” material, words cut from outside texts such as magazines or newspapers. Words that appeal to the poet are collected and organized into a final poem.

2. An Identity poem: Using your knowledge of poetic devices, you will write a poem about yourself. This poem can describe you physically, but the focus should be on describing you personally, emotionally, or even spiritually.

3. A Guided Free Write composition from one of three prompts: If you’re comfortable writing poetry or want direction to guide your writing, you might want to choose this option. For this you’ll be given three prompts. Selecting one, you’ll then create a poem of your own style and structure.

For all three options, you’ll write a poem containing a minimum 20 lines and using a minimum of 5 poetic devices (rhyme, metaphor, assonance, personification, etc., -- please consult your Figurative Language worksheets for others we’ve studied in class). You are of course welcome to write more than 20 lines and use more than 5 devices, but those minimums are the basis of your grading.

Part II: The Visual Component

For this part of the project, you’re required to create a visual of your written work. This can be a drawing, a cartoon, a collage, or a multimedia presentation (2 minutes). Once you’ve written your poem, consider the images you created and the language you used to express your idea(s). How could they best translate to a visual effect?

I want you to be creative and to have fun with this part of the assignment, but keep in mind that you’re obligated to directly support your poem with this visual. Your visual component needs to be relevant, and should act as a reflection of your poem.

You’ll have tomorrow’s class (Tuesday, 3/1) and part of Friday’s class (3/4) to work on both pieces of the project. Note: if you decide to do the Found poem, you’ll need to bring in your own materials (magazines, newspapers, other texts) for Tuesday’s class. Those who select that assignment but fail to bring in materials will be required to pick one of the other writing assignments.

If you have any questions about the assignments, please email me ()! I won’t be at Mountain View this Wednesday or Thursday but I’m always available to answer your clarifications and concerns. Have fun!
