Creative Writing for “The Devil and Tom Walker” or “The Lady or the Tiger?”

20 points

Due on Wednesday, November 7

Option 1 – An updated version of “The Devil or Tom Walker”

In this assignment you will explain how you would modernize the story. You don’t have to rewrite a story with dialogue, unless you want to, but you do need to include the specific details of how it would become a modern American folktale about making a deal with the devil. You should include the five elements of a story, focusing on the setting, who the characters are and what they are like, what form does the devil take on, what is the deal, what is the protagonist seeking from the devil (knowledge, experience or wealth) and what happens to the protagonist – redemption or damnation. Be sure to include organization to your updated story (2-3 paragraphs – at least ¾ of a page, no more than 2 pages). Create a book cover or drawings that reflect the story.

Option 2 – Ending to “The Lady or the Tiger?”

Obviously, there is no resolution to the story. Your job is to write the ending. You must stick to the storyline and the writing should mimic or reflect Stockton’s writing. Your first line should read, “She had known she would be asked, she had decided what she would answer, and, without the slightest hesitation, she had moved her hand to the right.” (2-3 paragraphs – at least ¾ of a page, no more than 2 pages). Create a book cover or drawings that reflect the story.

left margin – first line - your name, second line – English, Mrs. Watson/Mrs. Hofmann, third line – due date, fourth line – centered - title
