Creating your own class cricket timeline

Below is a list of dates related to the history of cricket. Decide with your classmates, who is going to take each of the dates and then you need to represent your chosen date on a piece of A4 paper. The date should be written clearly in the top left hand corner, your facts should be included and then pictures should be drawn. Once the whole class have finished their pages, they can be displayed around the classroom to make a ‘History of cricket timeline’.

1709 First recorded inter-county match: Kent v Surrey.

1729 Date of earliest surviving bat, belonging to John Chitty, and now in the pavilion at The Oval.

1771 Width of bat limited to 4 ¼ inches, where it has remained.
1774 LBW law devised.

1795 First recorded case of a dismissal “leg before wicket”.

1844 First official international match: Canada v United States.

1850 Wicket-keeping gloves first used.

1864 “Overhand bowling” authorised by MCC and John Wisden’s The Cricketer’s Almanac first published.

1873WG Grace becomes the first player to record 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in a season
1877 First Test match: Australia beat England by 45 runs in Melbourne.

1880 First Test in England: a five-wicket win against Australia at The Oval.

1900 Six-ball over becomes the norm, instead of five.

1910 Six runs given for any hit over the boundary, instead of only for a hit out of the ground.

1931 Stumps made higher (28 inches not 27) and wider (nine inches not eight – this was optional until 1947).

1934 First women’s Test: Australia v England at Brisbane

1947 Denis Compton of Middlesex and England scores a record 3,816 runs in an English season.

1960 First tied Test, Australia v West Indies at Brisbane.

1970 Proposed South African tour of England cancelled: South Africa excluded from international cricket because of their government’s apartheid policies.

1971 First one-day international: Australia v England at Melbourne.
1975 First World Cup: West Indies beat Australia in final at Lord’s.

1977 Centenary Test at Melbourne, with identical result to the first match: Australia beat England by 45 runs.

1978 Graham Yallop of Australia wears a protective helmet to bat in a Test match, the first player to do so.

1985 Fastest century scored by Viv Richards in 56 balls for the West Indies against England

1994Brian Lara of Warwickshire becomes the only player to pass 500 in a first class innings: 501 not out v Durham.

1996 Fastest century beaten by Shahid Afridi of Pakistan as he hits 100 in 37 balls against Sri Lanka

2003 Twenty20 Cup, a 20-over-per-side evening tournament, inaugurated in England.
2004Brian Lara becomes the first man to score 400 runs in a Test innings and this was done against England.

2005England regain the ashes and Shane Warne becomes the first player to take 600 test match wickets

2006 Sri Lankan pair, Jayawardene and Sangakkara set new world record for batting partnership by scoring 624 runs between them.

2007 The West Indies host the cricket world cup for the first time and the first Twenty20 World cup is held in South Africa

2008 Breakaway Indian Premier League starts in India attracting top named cricketers from around the world

2008 Kevin Pieterson takes over as England’s captain

2009England to host the second Twenty20 World cup finals

2009Cardiff to host their fist test match – The first of the 2009 Ashes series between Australia and England
