Creating Perspectives Unit Project

Now that you have read, watched, and listened to all of the different perspectives of the Dixie Chicks controversy, now it’s your turn to report and create your own media perspective on one of the world’s most controversial events.

First: You will choose a partner and a topic. There will be a list of topics to choose from.

Research: Once you have your topic chosen, you will begin the research process. Start with the basics (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How) and then look into more specific details about the event. Some example questions you might pose about the topic could include:

-How did this event become controversial?
-What media outlets covered this event?

-What were the different lenses and perspectives used when talking about the event?

-Are the sources I’m looking at credible/reliable and how do I know?

-What different types of criticisms can be used when examining this event?

Assignment: You and your partner will be expected to create a Smore INDIVIDUALLY on this event; this that means EACH of your will submit your own work on a different Smore. These two pages will contain similar information, but WILL NOT be the same. Each Smore must contain the following:

  • Basic background information on the event - including but not limited to the who, what, when, where, why’s of the event.
  • 2-3 DIFFERENT ways the media portrayed the event (in what different perspectives and lenses was the event looked at)
  • 1-2 different biases you have found through reports in the media; explained by you!
  • 2 different criticisms (historical, cultural, marxist, feminist, etc.) that the event can be examined under and how that criticism affects perception of the issue
  • visual evidence from a primary document (Newspaper, picture, video)
