Creating a Newsletter from a Blank Publication

This instruction sheet is based on Publisher 2002 (XP).

Publisher Objectives:

  1. Create the basic pages:
  • Select a style.
  • Click on Blank Publication.
  • Go to Insert menu and choose Page.
  • On Number of New Pages, put a 1.
  • Make sure After Current Page is selected and click OK.
  • Change to Page 1 by clicking on 1 on Status Bar.
  1. Create Word Art:
  • Click on the Insert Word Art icon.
  • Select a style.
  • Type William James Staff News.
  • Click OK.
  • To set formatting, right click on selected Word art.
  • Click outside the text box to end Word Art Menus. (Double click on word art text box to re-open Word Art menus.)
  1. Create and format text boxes:
  • Click on TextBox icon.
  • Click and drag to create a text frame in middle of page.
  • Go to Format menu, TextBox, TextBox tab, Columns.
  • Set number of columns to 2 and OK.
  • Set “Include Continued on Page…” and OK.
  • Create another box with the same formatting at the bottom of the page.
  • Click on one of the textboxes.
  • Go to Edit, Copy.
  • Move to Page 2 by clicking on the 2 on the Status Bar.
  • Paste 3 times and then move the boxes from on top of each other to the top, middle and bottom of the page.
  • Return to Page 1 by clicking on the 1 on the Status Bar.
  1. Add text and deal with overflow:
  • Click on the middle text box to select it.
  • Select the Insert menu and choose Text File.
  • Choose “Internet Funnies.doc” and click OK.
  • When asked about auto overflow, click No.
  • Click on Connect Text Frames tool.
  • Move to Page 2 by clicking on 2 on Status Bar.
  • Click in top text box or whatever box you want to overflow to go to.
  • Right click in an open spot in the text box.
  • Choose Change Frame and Text Frame Properties.
  • Select Include “Continued from Page…” and click OK.
  • Move to Page 1 by clicking the tab at the bottom of the page.
  • Repeat procedure above to insert text and deal with an overflow in other text boxes on first and second pages.
  1. Insert a graphic
  • Click in the top textbox.
  • Choose the Clip Organizer Frame tool .
  • Find a picture and click on it.
  • Resize picture as desired
  • Move the picture to an appropriate spot in the middle text box by positioning the cursor until the move icon (a little moving van) is visible, then left click, hold, and drag.
  1. Add automatic page numbers on all pages:
  • On the View menu, click Master Page.
  • Create a small text frame where you want the page number to appear by clicking on the text frame tool, then clicking and dragging to create the box. Move the box to the desired location on the page.
  • Type any text you want to appear next to the page number (for example, the word "Page"). Don’t type a number.
  • On the Insert menu, click Page Numbers.
  • Publisher inserts a pound sign (#). On foreground pages, this appears as a page number.
  • On the View menu, click Master Page. Page numbers should now be visible.
