Creating and recording content for the internet

This is a guide for Communities (Branches, Student Chapters, Societies, Committees and Taskforces) who are interested in recording and uploading content to the internet.

The AusIMM has established a YouTube channel where users can view our online content:

www.youtube.com/theausimm

YouTube allows for easy upload of videos and has a wide distribution that is readily accessible across many device platforms. The AusIMM YouTube channel has a wide array of content from lectures, presentations and information from various Community events and AusIMM conferences.

This guide provides broad information on:

·  equipment

·  editing software

·  process to upload presentation

·  points to consider.

The requirements for recording events in a small meeting room will be very different from recordings in a larger space. Communities will need to investigate the most appropriate equipment for their specific needs and budget.

1.  Digital video camcorder

Camcorders vary in price greatly – from inexpensive consumer recorders to high-end professional equipment. If the content is primarily the recording of lectures, a high-end professional camera may not be required.

Features that should be considered in the purchase of a camcorder include:

·  Internal memory. A flash memory with large capacity removes the need for memory sticks. Recordings can easily be downloaded directly to a computer.

·  External memory. Allows for insertion of memory sticks to record longer content than the internal memory may allow.

·  Microphone input. Essential to allow the connection of an external microphone.

·  Tripod. To maintain stable recordings.

·  Zoom lens. Ensure the zoom lens is adequate for your needs. The zoom capabilities for camcorders vary greatly.

·  Format. Ensure it records in a recognised recording format that will allow it to be uploaded to the internet. File formats for YouTube are included below.

New camcorders are geared towards creating content that can be uploaded to the internet. Check to ensure the camcorder records in one of the many file formats that YouTube plays. This will remove the need to reformat your recording into one of the recognised YouTube formats.

As the recording is going to be uploaded to YouTube – it does not have to be in high definition quality.

YouTube supports many file formats including:

·  MOV / ·  .MPEGPS
·  .MPEG4 / ·  .FLV
·  .AVI / ·  3GPP
·  .WMV / ·  WebM

Camera Resolution: YouTube's widescreen format recommendation is 1920x1080 or 1280x720 (16:9). So before recording, make sure your camera is already set to the appropriate resolution.

2.  Microphone

Most of the inbuilt camcorder microphones are not suitable for clear recording of sound, especially for lectures and presentations. Inbuilt camcorder microphones are not precise enough to keep excess noises out of the recording. Lectures and presentations can be very difficult to hear as a result.

It is recommended that an external microphone is used for recordings to pick up the presentation clearly and accurately. The camcorder will have a microphone input to allow for the use of external microphones.

Wired and Wireless External Microphones

Most types of camcorder microphones are available in wired and wireless versions. Wired camcorder microphones connect directly into your camera. Wireless microphones, on the other hand, come with a receiver and a transmitter. The transmitter is connected to the microphone, and the receiver is connected to your camcorder.

The most convenient microphone to purchase is a wireless microphone. This can be placed directly with the speaker for clear recordings. It can also be used for Q&A sessions. Lapel microphones are particularly good for video interviews.

3.  Editing software

The most likely reason that editing software may be required is for the insertion of power point slides from a lecture. Communities will need to edit in power point slides into the presentation before they send the fully edited file to AusIMM Services for uploading.

Lectures without power point slides will require little if any editing.

There are many software options on the market – including a number of basic editing packages that are free. Advanced software packages (Avid, Final Cut Pro, Adobe) can be very expensive. In most instances, the free software should provide all the features that will be needed.

4.  Uploading the presentation

The Community will need to provide AusIMM Services with:

·  file of the presentation

·  authorisation form.

File: Once the presentation has been recorded this will need to be saved to a memory stick and sent to AusIMM Services to upload to the AusIMM’s YouTube channel.

AusIMM Services will return the memory stick to you, once the file has been transferred.

Authorisation form: The Community must ensure the authorisation form is signed by the presenter. This gives The AusIMM permission to upload the presentation to our website and other online platforms.

This form has been attached to the end of this guide, and is also uploaded from the Community Committee resource page on the AusIMM website.

The recorded presentation on a memory stick and signed authorisation form must be sent to:

5. Key considerations

The Community should consider the following to determine whether recording of presentations is appropriate for their needs:

Total Cost: Communities must factor the total cost of purchasing equipment including the camcorder, costs of additional batteries, microphones, cables, memory cards and editing software.

Time: Recording a presentation takes time and uses Community resources. Communities must ensure there are sufficient Community members with the expertise and time available to record and edit presentations.

Power point slides: The greater the number of power point slides in a presentation, the greater time spent editing these into the recording. Communities may decide that only those presentations with few or no power point slides will be recorded. The time and effort to edit in a large number of power point presentations into a recording can be considerable.

Audience: Each Community should carefully consider the potential audience for a presentation – highly specialised presentations may have very limited online appeal. Communities should consider this when deciding if a presentation will be recorded or not. Presentations that are broader in their scope or where the presenter has a high profile will garner a larger viewing audience.
