Creating a Web Page with Microsoft FrontPage 2000

Graphics used from SEMO Computer Services Department

1. The first thing to do when designing a web page is to plan the site out. Sketch it out on a piece of paper or something just to have an idea of what will be on the site and where everything will be placed.

2. Next, get all the graphics and pictures that are going to be used on the site. This will be helpful that way they don’t have to be searched for later in the project. (This is another great time to find a good counter for the website if one is needed or if it is decided not to use the ones that FrontPage provide.)

3. Now start using FrontPage to begin the web page.

A. Launch FrontPage if the program is not already open.

B. Select File in the menu bar.

C. Select New from the drop down menu.

D. Select Pagefrom the submenu.

E. From the General tab, select the Normal Page or one of theColumn Pagelayouts.

F. Press the Ok button.

4. Next start adding content for the website. There are many options to use in FrontPage that allow you to be many different things. Most buttons for Fonts and inserting text are in the Formatting Tool Bar which is basically the same as Microsoft Word.

5. Inserting graphics and pictures is a simple process also.

A. Insert the cursor to where the graphic needs to be placed. (Graphic can be moved later if needed.)

B. Next go to the Menu Bar (which is shown in the above figure) and choose the Insert option.

C. Choose Clip Art or From File

1. If Clip Art is picked then choose the desired clip art picture from the gallery thatis on the computer that is being used.

2. If From File is chosen then indicate to FrontPage where that file is at. Such as on the A: drive in a floppy disk or saved to My Documents on the computer.

6. Next reference graphics in FrontPage. These instructions are not for inserting graphics into your pages, but for being able to see your graphics once your pages are published. If you do not include the following code in the <HEAD> area of each of your Web pages, your graphics will not be visible. Also, this coding should be used in order to easily link to other Web page files in your account.

A. Open the Web page in FrontPage 2000.

B. Make sure the Web Page is open in Page view.

C. Click on the HTML tab at the bottom of the window.

D. Scroll to the top of the page and place your cursor after the command <HEAD>

E. Press your <ENTER> key to go to the next line and type:

<base href="

Make sure to substitute the first four characters of your e-mail address forxy12.

F. Select the Normal tab at the bottom of your window to return to Normal view and

begin working on your Web page again.

7. Next insert a Hit Counter (If Needed).

A. Insert the cursor the where the hit counter will be located.

B. Choose the Insert option on the Front Page tool bar.

C. Choose the Component option

D. Choose the Hit Counter option

E. Pick which design is best suited for your page and click OK.

1. In the Specify theLocation to publish your web to: textbox, type:

ftp://semovm.semo.edu/http

2. Make sure that you select the Publish all pages, overwriting any already on

the destinationradio button. (If this is not marked, you will most likely receive

error messages. In that event, you will need to try publishing again with the

corrected setting. )

3. Press the Publish button.

time to publish Web pages and you do not already have a http subdirectory in your

account, it will take a little longer for FrontPage to create the subdirectory before

transferring the files.
