Create a Protocol

Instructions:

  1. Log into ICON.
  2. Click the IACUC tab at the top and then select the name of the research team to open your research team workspace.
  1. Click Create Protocol.

Note: It is recommended that you set up all the building blocks (firstcreate the substances and then the procedures), BEFORE creating your protocol.

  1. Complete each of the SmartFormpages. Pay closepayingattention to the fields explained below. Click Continue in the Navigation Bar to move through the pages. In addition, response must be provided to any fields marked with an asterisk (*) before you can move forward with your protocol.

Basic Information

  • Question #6.What is the intention of the animal protocol*: Please note that the SmartFormwill add orremove pages based onyour response to question #6.For example, if you select Breeding, the SmartForm adds a Breeding page.

The remainder of this SmartForm instruction page will focus on the 5 items indicated on the image below (Jump To menu: Protocol Team Members, Experiments, Procedure Personnel Assignment, Animal Justification, Alternatives)

Protocol Team Members

Question #1. Identify each additional person involved in…the research: Add each person who will edit the protocol or perform any of the research procedures. The PI is specified on the Basic Information page. Do not add that person again here.

Experiments

Question #1. *Define the experiments to be used in this protocol:Click theAddbutton. The Edit Experiment page opens. Complete the form by providing the following requested information:

Edit Experiment

Question #2. Species:If your research team has a default species set up, that species will already be selected here. You may change to a different species if needed.

Question #6. Select common procedures: These procedures apply to all animals in the experiment.

Question #7. Define variable procedures: These procedures apply to some of the animals or apply differently across animals in the experiment. For example, you might use a substance administration procedure in the experiment, but the doses, routes, and/or concentrations may vary across animals in the experiment.

Question #11. Number of animals by pain category*: Click the (?) Help Button to see a list of the pain categories. You are going to revisit the numbers you list here on the Animal Justification page.

Click OK, or click OK and Add Another if you’re going to add another experiment. Alternatively, you can click OK and return to the Experiments page. You mayclick Copyto duplicate the experiment to be used ; and make any necessary changes to the newly copied experiment. After completing the changes to the experiments, click Continue.

Procedure Personnel Assignment

Question #1. *Click the Update button on the right of each procedure to Sselect the team members who will be performing each procedure. Click Update, then select the team member for each procedure. Click Continue.

Animal Justification

Question #1. *Click Update to adjust the number of animals to be used or produced for this protocol. Click theUpdatebutton, then enter the actual number of animals for each Pain Category.

Question #3: *Justify the number of animals to be involved in this protocol. Whenever possible, the number of animals and experimental group sizes should be statistically justified (e.g., provision of a power analysis). Provide justification for the number of animals requested. The number of animals should be statistically justified (power analysis) and should be the minimum number required to obtain statistically valid results.

Alternatives

  1. Record searches for alternatives from at least 2 databases for each procedure that causes pain or distress: This page is required if you have animals identified in the D or E pain categories. Click Add and complete the page.

After completing the rest of the SmartForm, click Finish. You will be taken to the protocol workspace. You can continue to make changes to the protocol (Edit Protocol button). The protocol remains in the Pre-Submission state until you submit it for review.
