Montenegrin students to take part in European Youth Debate on migration

Preparations kick off on 10 March with EESC visit to the school

On 10 March Roman Haken, a member of the European Economic and Social Committee will visit the Ju Gimnazija in Cetinje to prepare students for the "Your Europe, Your Say" European Youth debate which will take place later in Brussels on 17-19 March 2016. This is the first time that Montenegro will take part in this EESC initiative since its launch 7 years ago.

Mr. Haken will work with the students and one teacher to prepare for the event, which this year will focus on migration in Europe. He will present the EESC's activities and its role as the voice of civil society in Europe and give them guidance on the debate. Students taking part from across Europe will be tasked with coming up with concrete measures to be taken in schools, clubs, etc., to promote effective integration of young migrants into European societies.

Thirty-three schools have been selected from among over 400 applicants from the 28 EU Member States and, for the first time, the 5 candidate countries (Albania, Turkey, Serbia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia as well as Montenegro,). The EESC is organising this event for the seventh consecutive year to ensure that the views, experiences and ideas of young people are taken into account in EU policy making.

In applying for the event Ju Gimnazija explained why it wished to participate in the event: "Active engagement in the world around us is necessary for young people. Our students are aware that they should create the world they live in, and if they do not start now, it will soon be too late".

Mr. Haken, a Czech national, has been a member of the EESC since 2006. In his country, he is a member of the Czech government's Council of NGOs and director of the Centre for Community Organising of Central Moravia, where he is responsible for programmes promoting citizen involvement in the development of local municipalities. Since 2002 he has also been a member of the Central and Eastern European Citizens Network, which focuses on citizen participation in decision-making processes, and, since 2003, of the SF team for a sustainable future, which promotes the involvement of NGOs in the preparation of EU programming documents.

Students from Montengro can already come into contact with students from the other participating schools on Facebook or Twitter to exchange ideas and information.
