Course Description
Study Skills and Strategies is a semester long course for freshman students. This course is designed to assist students with the transition to high school by providing study skills and strategies to help them be successful. The teacher directed program provides students with the tools to help them be effective and independent learners. Students will be given ample practice with each skill to help them develop confidence and mastery to apply the strategies to their classroom material. Students will be provided with ahands-on and easy to follow activity book.
Every class period will start with a 10 minute direct instruction lesson. After the lesson, each student will have 10 minutes of independent practice. The remainder of the period will be available for students to work on school work and apply the skills and strategies we learn throughout the semester.

1. Organization techniques
2. Study time, place, habits, and goals
3. Visual aids
4. Graphic organizers and charts
5. Reading and taking notes from textbooks
6. Taking notes in class
7. Using reference sources
8. Remembering information
9. Taking tests
10. Building vocabulary through word meaning clues
Make-Up Work
If you know in advance that you are going to miss class for any reason,you are responsible for communicating with me regarding the work you will miss before you are gone. The expectation is that you will either make up the work in advance or on the day you return based on the situation and my discretion.
All other absences should be communicated before school starts on the day you return. If you were present on the day the assignment, quiz, or test was announced and are absent on the day the assignment, quiz, or test is collected,you are responsible for the work on the day you return. If you are absent on the day the assignment, quiz, or test is given, you will have two days to complete the work and turn it in.
Late Work
All assignments will be docked 5% each day they arelate.
Grading Scale
A: 93-100
B: 85-92
C: 77-84
D: 69-76
F: Below 68
