This course introduces students to the Microcomputer and various state-of-the-art software applications: word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database. The overall goal of the course is to guide the student into becoming a proficient microcomputer user.

Prerequisite(s): CPT050 or satisfactory Placement Test score

General Course Objectives

This course will develop students’ knowledge of:

  • Microcomputer operating system components, selected application software, and electronic communication techniques.
  • Word processing software for document development for college and workplace requirements.
  • Spreadsheet software for worksheet development for college and workplace requirements.
  • Presentation software for communication of facts and ideas to meet college and workplace requirements.
  • Database software for data organization, retrieval, and reporting for college and workplace requirements
  • World Wide Web for information retrieval and communication for college and workplace requirements

V.CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

A.EXAMS, GRADING AND ASSIGNMENTS:

The cutoff points for letter grades will be 90% to 100% =A, 80% to 89%=B, 70% to 79%=C, 60% to 69%=D, and 59% or below = F. Keep your own point totals.

B.ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is recommended as absences will affect the ability of the student to maintain a consistent pace throughout the course. Exams are designed to test the knowledge acquired through the material covered during class as well as found in the textbook and supplemental materials. Regular class attendance will make this testing process less stressful. Students should expect to spend from 6 to 9 hours per week studying/learning the material covered in this course in addition to class time.

C.WITHDRAWAL POLICY: Students withdrawing prior to midterm will receive a “W” grade. Students withdrawing after mid-term will receive a grade of “W” only if passing at the time of the requestA college initiated withdrawal will be initiated for any student failing to login into this course in Blackboard and/or participate in classroom activities for a period of three consecutive weeks.

D.CHEATING/PLAIGIRISM:Students are expected to complete their own assignments, exams, etc. Please refer to the WCCC STUDENT HANDBOOK for more information.

E.EXAMS:There will be five (5) exams in this course. Each exam will be announced well in advance of the due date (at least one week) to allow each student sufficient time to complete them. Permission may be granted to take an exam late (within 2 weeks of the offered date) provided there are verifiable and extenuating circumstances. The student is responsible for providing this documentation to the instructor at the time of the request to make-up the exam. Exams may not be taken more than 2 weeks after their due dates and MUST be taken by the end of the Spring 2016 term (5/10/2016). Requests to make up exams must be emailed to your instructor.

F.PROJECTS:Project are required for this course. Project descriptions will be provided well in advance of the due date. All projects are due at the BEGINNING OF THE CLASS of their due date

G.LATE DELIVERABLES: There will be a 10% per week (or partial week) penalty for late projects and exams. All items MUST be turned in/completed by the end of the Spring 2016term and NOT later than 2 weeks from their initial due date.

H.CLASSPARTICIPATION: Each student is expected to contribute to the course. This participation will include participating in classroom discussions and hands-on exercises. To receive full credit for participation, a student must attend all classes[1] and participate in the class activities. Lateness and leaving early will negatively affect a students’ participation score as will non-attentiveness[2][3][4] during class time. In-Class assignments will also count towards this participation grade. These in-class assignments may not be made up. Requests for TRA (and other) verifications will reflect the students' actual performance at the time of the request. Students requesting this type of verification will receive an accurate reply from the instructor with regards to their level of participation in the course.
