Course Selections for Rising Freshmen

2014-2015 School Year

ENGLISH(Choose one)

English 1 – Students in English 1 study communication in speakingand listening, reading and writing, and other media and technology across a variety of genres.

English I ( yearlong) – This option will be paired with the Math I (yearlong) option for students who need additional support.

Honors English 1 - strong “A or B” and solid language arts foundation.

  • All students will be placed in English I. Those students who need more support will be placed in a English I/Math I (yearlong) section all year.

MATH(Choose one)

For a student to be successful in math, it is imperative that students master each course and have strong fundamental skills before moving on to the nextlevel;

Math 1 - For students who made a B or higher in Math 8 or for students who made a C or below in Math 1. Studentsmust pass Math 1 for promotion to 10th grade.

Math 1 (yearlong) –For students who made a C or below in Math 8.

HonorsMath 2–Strong A or B in Math I.

HonorsMath 3–Strong A or B in Math I and Math II.

  • The Math I (yearlong) option is paired with the English I yearlong.

SCIENCE(Choose one)

Earth/Environmental Science -Introduces the student to the function and the impact of human interactions on the earth’s geological and environmental systems.

Honors Earth/Environmental Science – Strong background in Science.

Honors Biology–Strong A or B in (Honors) Earth/Environmental Science.Strong background in Science.

Notes:

If a student registers for Biology it should be Honors Biology. This is because we want to expose our students to rigor and growth.

Taking two Science courses is recommended only if student is strong in Science and Language arts. Students interested in highly competitive colleges may be interested in taking two courses.

It is possible to double up on 2 Math classes and 2 Science classes your 9th grade year.

Social Studies (Choose one)

Civics/Economics – All freshmen take this course. Students examine political, governmental, and legal topics that engage them in examining the legal and political systems of our society.

Honors Civics/Economics –This course covers the material with greater complexity and acceleration.

AP Government and Politics – This course will be available for your very advanced students. Those interested must take Honors Civics/Economics 1st semester an make a strong A. This course provides students with an intellectual foundation for observing, analyzing, and understanding national politics in the United States.

Spanish 1 / 11412 / If you begin a foreign language as a freshman, you should continue through your senior year. Colleges want to see you take a foreign language your senior year, so you may want to wait until sophomore or junior year.

Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) / 95012AR / JROTC at NHHS introduces students to Army JROTC. It provides basic knowledge of leadership, wellness, fitness, first aid, geography, earth science, citizenship, and basic military skills.

Microsoft Excel and Access / BM202 / Recommended prerequisite of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Publisher. Learn how to use the newest version of Microsoft Excel and Access.

Foods 1 / FN412 / Examines nutritional needs of individuals; emphasizes the relationship of diet to health, kitchen & meal management, and food preparation.
Parenting and Child Development / FE602 / Students are Introduced to responsible nurturing and basic applications of child development theory with children from infancy through age six.

Health/PE / 63022 / This course is required for graduation. It is made up of two nine-week segments – nine weeks of health and nine weeks of physical education.All freshmen will take health/PE.
Tennis ( Beginning) / 62022A / Tennis covers fundamental skills, rules, etiquette, and game play.
Team Sports / 62022D / Students learn the history, basic skills, and rules associated with many traditional sports.
Body Conditioning and Weight Training / 62022F / Designed for students who are interested in strenuous physical activity. The primary focus of this course is weight training.
