Math Grades 7 and 8

Mrs. Galletti

Welcome to 7th and 8th grade. I am looking forward to a great year together 

These next two years are extremely important for students, because we are laying the foundation for Regents level instruction in high school, as well as preparing students for Common Core based state exams. I also try to prepare students for life in the “real world”, by setting high expectations and accepting no excuses.

Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions or concerns throughout the school year.

General Information

1. Many different techniques will be used this year to assist students in learning math. Classroom instruction will consist of traditional means of teaching, such as, note taking and examples, interactive Smart Board instruction, group activities, Blended Learning, math games, and technology.

2. Textbook: Grade 7- Prentice Hall Middle Grades Math- Course 3

Grade 8- Prentice Hall Integrated Algebra

Workbooks: Eureka (Engage NY)

3. Online Programs: i-Ready

3. Textbook website available at phschool.com or use the link from my webpage. This is a valuable resource that offers online quizzes and tests for practice, as well as, lesson tutorials for most lessons. This is especially helpful if a student is absent. 7th graders will use the Prentice Hall Course 3 (8th grade) textbook and 8th graders will use PH-Algebra (9th grade) text.

4. Students are expected to be prepared every day. All books and supplies, including calculators, are to be brought to class each day.

Preparedness will be reflected in a student’s class work/participation grade.

Homework

About 30 minutes of math homework is assigned almost everyday, except when a lesson was not completed or on test days. It is crucial for students to practice new skills immediately to reinforce and master them.

  • Students must show all work in workbook or on loose leaf, or credit will not be given.
  • All homework assignments are due the following day. Since the answers are reviewed in class, failure to complete a page, or failure to bring a workbook to class will result in a zero.
  • Students who are absent must make up work by the end of the school week or it becomes a zero.
  • The student is responsible for getting the missed work from the teacher or classmate

Homework cannot be made up once a zero is recorded on the Cornerstone System.

  • Graded (not checked) work will not be accepted more than one day late, and will lose 20% of the total grade. Ex. A grade of 100 will be reduced to an 80.

Supplies:

  • One section of a 3-ring binder and a divider/folder are required.
  • Students are expected to take notes and write examples in their notebooks.
  • Pencils, red pens, blue or black pens and colored pencils
  • Calculator, workbooks, ruler and protractor
  • Access to a computer and printer with internet service is required

Tests and quizzes

All tests are announced in advance. Students may have advance notice for quizzes, but should be prepared for lesson quizzes (exit tickets) at any time. All tests/quizzes should be saved in folder to help review for midterm and final exams. In the event of a discrepancy involving a recorded grade online, the student must have the test to verify.

Midterm and final cumulative exams will be given and will count as 1/6 of the final grade.

Grading Policy:

45 % Tests : approximately 1- 2 per quarter

25 % Quizzes/Exit Tickets: 3-6 per quarter

10% Homework: 15-20 per quarter (both graded and * checked)

20% Classwork/ Participation and Preparedness/Projects: at least 4 per quarter in total

Note: Students’ grades are based on a wide variety of assignments and activities in a given quarter, not test grades exclusively, therefore; extra credit will not be available (as per the ADNY)

Review these requirements with your child, sign and return only the bottom portion. Please keep requirements in the math binder so you may refer to them during the school year.

This will be my first checked homework ( due Monday) 
