Intermediate Archery

Catalog Description:

PHED 2ARI – Intermediate Archery 1 unit

This course is designed to give students of intermediate ability an opportunity not only to review basic skill techniques, rules of safety and etiquette in archery, but also to improve their skill and experience various types of tournament situations. Archery has particular importance as a carryover activity. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the elementary archery course at Chabot College, or tournament competition outside the school setting. The class will meet 3 hours per week.

Prerequisite Skills:

Successful completion of the elementary archery course at Chabot College, or tournament competition outside the school setting.

Expected Outcomes for the Students:

The student should be capable of shooting more proficiently, i.e., with a higher arrow average, than he was able to before entering the class. He should have gained an understanding of archery etiquette and courtesies.

Course Content:

1. A review of the following points of skill and knowledge:

a. History of the sport.

b. Care and selection of equipment.

c. Fundamentals of shooting.

d. Safety rules.

e. Scoring of target, field, and animal faces.

f. Common archery terms.

2. Individual and team competition:

a. Rounds

(1) FITA Round

(2) "Indoor" FITA I Round

(3) "Indoor" FITA II Round

(4) P.A.A. Round

(5) "Vegas" Round

b. Tournaments

(1) Interclass

(2) Novelty shoots

3. Movie depicting various experiences available in archery.

Methods of Presentation:

The materials for this course will be presented by means of lecture, demonstration, class discussion, and to

a large degree, individual help with shooting skills.

Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:

Each student shall be evaluated on the basis of his attendance, skill competency and achievement, and his knowledge of assigned reference material.

None

Special Student Material:

Students are required to wear flatheeled shoes, and to provide leather equipment, i.e., arm guard and either finger tab or shooting glove.
