70A - HEARTSAVER CPR & AED1/2 unit

A comprehensive course for the First responder, this course is designed to teach Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and relief of foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) to all lay rescuers, particularly those expected to respond to emergencies in the workplace. Responders such as police, airline personnel, security personnel, corporate employees, family members of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death, other rescuers, and those who need or want to learn CPR and how to operate an AED. Successful completion on the final exam and skills performance will qualify the participant for an American Heart Association Heartsaver AED course completion card. The mission of the American Heart Association's Emergency Cardiovascular Care Programs is to reduce disability and death from cardiac and respiratory emergencies and stroke by improving the Chain of Survival in every community. 6 hours lecture, 6 hours laboratory, 12 hours total.

Expected Outcomes for Students:

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. outline the links in the American Heart Association (AHA) Chain of Survival;
  2. describe the steps of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR);
  3. identify a patient in cardiac arrest;
  4. describe the safe and accurate use of an AED
  5. perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation;
  6. identify the signs of severe or complete Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO);
  7. demonstrate how to relieve a Foreign Body Airway Obstruction in a responsive victim;
  8. distinguish the signs of heart attack, stroke, respiratory arrest;
  9. describe strategies to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and injuries in children;
  10. practice good infection control techniques.

Course Content:

  1. Activating appropriate emergency response system; phoning 911
  2. Signs of cardiac arrest
  3. Performing CPR; 1-rescuer CPR for an adult, child and infant
  4. Safe and accurate use of the AED for adults and children older that 8 years old or approximately 25 kg in weight
  5. Signs of foreign body airway obstruction
  6. Relief of foreign body airway obstruction in the responsive victim of any age
  7. Using a barrier device
  8. Signs of heart attack, stroke
  9. Strategies to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and injuries in children
  10. Infection control
