Anatomy Periods: 7th, 4th, 6th & 8th

Prep:5th Period & 2nd Period

Materials Needed: Composition Book, 3-Ring Binder & Colored Pencils (paper & pencils too!)

Prerequisite: Passing grade in Biology and completion of any other college-prep science class.

Text Book: Hole’s Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology – 9th edition

This is an entry level college text book written for students that do not have a strong background in the sciences, but wish to pursue a career in the allied health field. This textbook is intended to be used in a 1 semesterJunior College Anatomy & Physiology class. However, we will be covering most material in this text over the course of 2 semesters.

Grading Policy: Students earn their grades - I do not give grades! Students’ grades are based on completion and accuracy of homework, notes, quizzes, labs and tests. Weighting for each assignment varies depending on importance and difficulty (EX: Worksheet = 5 pts., Test = 100 pts.).

Tests/Quizzes will make up approximately 50% of the grade and Labs/Presentations/Homework will make up the remaining 50% of the grade. Semester grades are determined using the following scale:

A = 90 – 100%

B = 80 – 89%

C = 70 – 79%

NC= 69 – 0%

Class Expectations: Anatomy and Physiology is a college-prep science elective and meets the UC requirements for a Laboratory Science. As this is an optional class that you have chosen to take, I expect a high level of maturity and responsibility from students. Students naturally have a great deal of interest in the workings of the human body and no question will go unanswered in this class. I expect that students ask question respectfully and listen to all class discussions.

If maturity and respect for others cannot be maintained in this class, I will request your placement into another class.

Homework: Homework packets will be collected on test days in a packet-like form. Assignments will be “stamped” to indicate they were on time. ½ credit will be given to each late assignment!

Tests/Essential Skills : Students must earn a minimum of 70% on each chapter test to demonstrate mastery of the essential skills and concepts! Students that do not earn this minimum score must demonstrate mastery of the chapter’s essential skills in the form of a 5-10 question short answer re-take test. This re-take test will not count towards your grade, only for clearing essential skills. The re-take test can be taken an unlimited number of times until mastery of the concepts is achieved.

Make-up Work: You have an equal number of days to make-up and assignment compared to the number of days you missed.

Intervention Stamp Requirements: Daily homework completed, passing all essential skills and an overall passing percent in the class.

California Science Standards: All juniors in this class will be taking the state CST for Biology in April (unless they are concurrently taking Chemistry or Physics). The concepts covered in this class continuously address the cell biology, genetics and physiology portions of the California Life Science/Biology state standards. As Biology is a pre-requisite to this class, we cover the state standards in much more detail and depth! You may visit for a complete list of standards for all classes and grade levels.

Dissections: Anatomy is the study of “parts” of the body, and being able to locate and identify these “parts” is essential. In order to identify the “real” anatomy of mammals we will be dissecting fetal pigsand assorted pig or sheep organs. These are not fresh organisms, but have been preserved.

Students are not required to participate in the dissections if they chose, however will be required to identify the required “parts” during lab practical tests.
