Course Offerings for 2017-2018 CHOIR/DRAMA/DANCE PATHWAYS
MUSICAL THEATRE/CHOIR (ENTRY LEVEL/INTERMEDIATE)
RISING STARS Musical Theatre/RAIDER CHORALE - This course covers Entry Level/Intermediate Musical Theatre & Choral technique for the entire year (This course counts as part of either the Drama Pathway or Choral Pathway). This course may be repeated for credit up to four times (though most students generally audition into a higher course level if they intend to do a choir or theatre pathway). Students will participate in two Choir Concerts and a one act children’s musical. Students in Grades 9-12 may sign up for this course with no prerequisite or prior experience. Please sign up for either Course # 804115y (Drama Pathway) or 802185y (Choral Pathway).

UPPER LEVEL MUSICAL THEATRE COURSES
CLASS ACT Musical Theatre/INTERMEDIATE WOMEN’S CHOIR - This is for Women Only in grades 9-12. Ladies in this group will perform in a full length musical theater piece and in 2-3 choir concerts that will include traditional & show choir music selections. This course counts as part of either the Drama Pathway or Choral Pathway. An audition is required for this course. This course may be taken for credit up to four times. TRIPLE THREAT Musical Theatre - This course is the most intense musical theatre course. Students must audition and should possess strong, high level skills in singing (alone and in groups), movement (dance/and theatre movement), and acting. Students should have a strong focus on the arts as a possible career path or a definite sense of how the performing arts skills will benefit their chosen career path. The course is open to students in grades 9-12. Students produce two competition pieces each year one for the REGION ONE ACT PLAY CONTEST and one for the SHULER HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS. NORTH STARS Advanced Drama - This course is open to students in grades 9-12 and requires an audition. This course is the advanced non-musical production class. Students are expected to demonstrate intermediate/advanced acting skills including (though not necessarily limited to) improvisational acting, monologues, scene work and mime/pantomime. Students produce a children’s show in the fall and a full length play in the spring. Advanced theatre literature, dramaturgy and dramatic writing skills are explored. UPPER LEVEL CHOIR COURSES
ADVANCED WOMEN’S CHOIR - The Advanced Women’s Chorale is the top treble ensemble at NFHS. It is an audition only ensemble for outstanding choral musicians in grades 10-12, with limited openings for exceptional freshmen. This ensemble performs rigorous 3 & 4 part repertoire for women’s voices. The Advanced Women’s Chorale perform 4-5 concerts annually and consistently receives Superior ratings at regional and national competitions. Members of this ensemble also have the opportunity to audition for district & all state honor choruses, participate in solo & ensemble festival and travel on our annual competition trip. CHAMBER SINGERS - The Chamber Singers are the top mixed ensemble at NFHS. It is an audition only ensemble for outstanding choral musicians in grades 10-12, with limited openings for exceptional freshmen. The Chamber Singers perform some of the most difficult mixed repertoire available to high school ensembles. They perform 4-5 concerts annually and consistently receives Superior ratings at regional and national competitions. Members of the Chamber Singers also have the opportunity to audition for district & all state honor choruses, participate in solo & ensemble festival and travel on our annual competition trip. DRAMA
ACTING - This course is open to all students grades 9-12 and has no prerequisite. Students may take this course up to three times for credit. The course covers basic tools for the actor including skill building in use of voice, movement and imagination for character creation. Students have performing opportunities in class and optional extra-curricular performance and theatre enrichment opportunities with the Improv Club and Thespian Troupe #5368. All extra-curricular performance opportunities are optional. There is no audition requirement for the course. Please sign up for Course #804015y.

TECHNICAL THEATRE - This course is open to all students grades 9-12 and has no prerequisites. Students may take the course up to four times for credit. This course covers basic design and construction principles for the theatre. Topics covered include (but are not limited to) design for lighting, set, sound, costumes, props and makeup. Some basic construction methods are taught, and some theoretical learning about each area is covered. Basic techniques for stage management, publicity and box office are covered. Students have optional opportunities for further application of learning through productions and Tech Theatre Club. All extra-curricular opportunities are optional there is no application or prerequisite for the entry level course, but registration for higher level courses may require permission of the instructor. NEW! DANCE – Brand new course and pathway ONLY BEING TAUGHT AT NFHS! The Dance 1 course seeks to start students on the career pathways that use dance/movement as a skill set. Students will study basic movement technique in four forms Ballet, Contemporary/Modern, Tap and World/Folk Dance. In addition, students will study principles of Choreography, Dance History/Criticism and basic Anatomy and Kinesiology. Please sign up for Course # 803105y.

All Students wishing to audition for an upper level Theatre course need to email Mrs. Ernst at and schedule a time to audition on Monday, February 27th between 5:30-7:30 PM. Students auditioning for ANY upper level theatre arts course need to prepare the audition material on the drama website at or the choral website at and complete the Upper Level Class Application located on the NFHS Website .
