Course Description

This course is a basic course in the various drugs used both legally and illegal. It is essentially,

• To identify the basic understanding of narcotics, and history

• To learn the basic identity of the various narcotics and their affects.

• To acquire an awareness of how illegal or legal drugs can ruin your life

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLO’s):

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

Identify the various illegal street drugs, their history, and various

usages and their effects.

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as

Stimulants.

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as

Depressants.

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as

Psychedelics.

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as narcotics/opiates

Define the various categories of drugs that are classified as

“others,” i.e., inhalants, sports drugs, and psychiatric medications.

Analyze the effect and behavioral changes in people that use

drugs.

Define the various principles and goals of treatment, mental

imbalances and illnesses that are caused by the use of psychoactive drugs

Identify the various legal drugs used by society

COURSE CONTENT:

This course will consist of lecture, written and reading assignments, and may include videos, films, and class or group discussions. Students should have little difficulty with (2) exams and successfully completing the course if they attend class, complete required reading and assignments, take notes, study, and participate in class when asked to do so. Last date to drop without a W, 11/17/17. It is your responsibility to drop, not the instructors.

GRADES:

Your total accumulated points will determine your final course grade as follows:

600 – 540 points = A

539 – 480 points = B

479 – 420 points = C

419 – 360 points = D

359 and below points = F

Participation in class (excessive absences will effect these points) up to 25 points

Newspaper Drug Article up to 25 points

Quizzes (There are two) up to 25 points each

Interview of drug user up to 100 points

Drug research paper (1st written assignment) up to 100 points

Mid Term Quiz up to 100 points

Final exam (quiz) up to 200 points

Total points possible 600 points

Extra Credit assignment TBA by instructor from 15-25 points

The final grade will be determined by examining the distribution of points earned by students. There are no make ups on the quizzes. It is important to attend these classes as these quiz points are important

Midterm quiz as well as the final exam must be completed in order to successfully pass the class. If you fail to complete your midterm quiz or fail to complete your final exam, you will receive a grade of F

CONDUCT: You are enrolled in a college course. Obstruction or disruption of this class is not acceptable. Students who engage in talking during lectures, leave class and cause a disruptive behavior may have their grade reduced or be dropped from the course. Cell phones ipads, etc must be on silent and if you have a family emergency and need to leave class, please inform the instructor.

Communication is the key to success in my class. Please communicate all issues, concerns and problems if possible.

CHEATING/PLAGIARISM:

Successful students always make sure that their work is original. Plagiarism is considered a form of cheating. Anyone who cheats, or is engaged in plagiarism will receive an “F” on the assignment. If repeated, the student

may fail the course and may be subject to disciplinary action from the college in accordance with Board Policy 6080.

Additional information regarding rules, regulations, and safety issues will be discussed in class

Students who are absent four consecutive classes will be dropped. Note: If excused due to illness or family emergency, instructor may keep student. Students who are absent more than four absences will not receive participation points. Class lectures are subject to change

Chapter One Introduction to Drugs and Society
Select a drug of your choice, i.e. marijuana, cocaine, alcohol.
Write a four (4) page paper on the history, effects, usage, and onset of the drug. Include a title page and a reference page. Include one reference from your text or other publication and at least one from the Internet. Format modified APA Guidelines Due Week Three!!
Week One Homework, bring in a newspaper article regarding drugs. Attach the article to a blank piece of paper and be prepared to discuss in class. Not an Internet news article
