Hunters Creek Middle School

7th Grade English Language Arts

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!
I am very excited to get this year started and to see so many familiar faces from 6th grade English! Please remember, that I am here to help both parents and students during the season of Middle School. I am more than happy to help in any way I possibly can! My door is always open and I encourage consistent communication. I look forward to working with new and familiar faces alike this year!

Course Description:

In seventh grade Language Arts, students will engage in reading, writing, speaking and listening activities throughout the year.

Course Objectives:

·  Students will score proficient or advanced on the Benchmark exam.

·  Students will gain a higher appreciation for language arts and learning.

·  Students will become global citizens by practicing kindness, appreciating differences, and working well with others.

Homework:

Students will write their homework for the week in their planners every Monday. Not only are students expected to complete their assigned homework in a timely manner, but they are also expected to finish any classwork not complete during class as well. This year students will have a bi-weekly writing journal, quarterly blue ribbons, and a weekly homework sheet to complete. Sometimes, students will have an opportunity to work on these in class.

Late Work Policy:

As a human myself, I understand that emergencies and mistakes do happen. With this being said, I will accept late work for up to 2 days after it is originally due. Late assignments will be penalized 10% per each day past due. Example: If it is 2 days late, the highest grade the student can possibly receive is an 80%. The student is responsible of placing late work in the appropriate late work bin. After the original due date, I will not ask students for their work.

Absent Policy/Work:

When a student is absent, they have 3 days to complete missed work and turn it in. It is the student’s responsibility to find any assignment that he/she missed while absent--I will not chase a student down to give them their missed work. There is a system set up in the classroom to ensure that they can acquire all absent work independently. The student is also responsible for obtaining any notes that they have missed from a fellow student or myself as well as being prepared for a test if absent for it originally. For extended absences, I will work with the student individually on a case by case basis.

Classroom Expectations:

1. Be kind and remember everyone is fighting their own battles.

2. Be the best version of you at all times possible.

3. Be responsible for you and your own learning.

4. Be respectful to everyone and everything.

5. Be expecting to put in hard work in order to learn.

6. Be kind regardless of circumstances or people or grades or life or anything because sometimes the only thing we can control is how kind we are to others.

***As you can probably tell, I think that kindness is the most important quality one can possess. With that being said, bullying, name-calling, and harsh joking will not be tolerated at all in the classroom.

Consequences:

I will be following the school-wide PBIS discipline policy. Information about this policy will be sent out from the school.
