Instructor: Eric Siegel

contact:

Objectives: The student should:

-improve his/her understanding of basic English Grammar

-particular focus on verb structures

-enlarge his/her vocabulary and familiarity with common expressions

-particular focus on economic and financial terms

-also, common ‘faux amis’ with French

-improve his/her oral expression

Evaluation: The total grade will be based on:

-10% attendance

-30% participation

-30% oral presentation

-30% final exam

note: The participation grade is an entirely subjective measure of my impression of the effort the student has or has not made throughout the class.

Bibliography: Each lesson is self-contained, and any materials (grammar exercises, readings) will be handed out. That said, the reference for grammar is: Murphy, Raymond, English Grammar in Use, intermediate level, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge. I have the 2nd edition, from 2002, but any edition, and any level, would be helpful. You are not required to purchase the text, but it is an excellent reference and guide for anyone who wishes to work more on their grammar.

Plan:

In general: Classes will begin with an oral exercise, followed by a review of notable vocabulary, grammar, and expression brought up during the exercise. Most classes will follow with a lesson and exercise on a particular point of grammar. Then we will work on either a reading or a video dealing with an economic issue. Finally, we will either work on a language ‘game’ or, listen (actively!) to each other’s oral presentations.

ORAL PRESENTATION INSTRUCTIONS:

In pairs, find a recent (last 2 months) article dealing (broadly) with economics or politics, from a major news source, and make a 5-7 minute presentation of the main points of the article. Explain the main idea(s) of the article in your own words. You will be graded on how well you understood the article, how well you communicate that understanding, and how well organized and interesting your presentation is. Note: timing is an important part of organization. You must give me a paper copy of your story at least 1 class before your presentation.
