BOARD OF EDUCATION

September 12, 2017

The Braxton County Board of Education met on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at the Braxton

County Board of Education Office. The following members were present:

Jill Cooper, President

Dave Hoover, Vice President

Shane Brown

Van Carr

Brad Shingler

Jill Cooper called the regular board meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

Jill Cooper led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Dave Hoover led a non-denominational prayer.

Lions Club members Don Jarvis and Bob Sowa signed in as a delegation to discuss eye

screenings. Tresha Cottrill signed in as a delegation with Head Start concerns.

Christina Bailey discussed Policy Council reports and announced that Head Start was

awarded the COLA Grant for $8,087.

Dave Hoover moved and Brad Shingler seconded to approve the consent agenda items

(approval of August 29, 2017 meeting minutes, payment of bills, budget transfers and

supplements, transportation requests, treasurer’s report, requests to be released from Braxton

County Schools to attend Gilmer County Schools and permission to attend Braxton County

Schools from Lewis County Schools).

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

Shane Brown moved and Van Carr seconded to approve the following employment/

reassignments for professional staff:

1. Sheba Kendig – Substitute Teacher effective retroactive September 5, 2017

2. Janice Hughes – Interventionist – Effective September 13, 2017

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

Van Carr moved and Brad Shingler seconded to approve the following contracts between

Principals and Supervising Aides for 2017-18 School Year:

1. Timothy Harman – Davis Elementary

2. Leah Herndon – Flatwoods Elementary

3. Kathy Facemire- BCHS

4. Sandra Fisher – BCHS

5. Susan Williams - BCHS

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

Shane Brown moved and Brad Shingler seconded to approve the following resignation for professional staff:

Meredith Hoover – 1/2 Split Grade Teacher at Flatwoods Elementary effective upon

employment of replacement

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

Dave Hoover moved and Brad Shingler seconded to approve the following employments for

extracurricular duties:

1. Ernie Tingler – Assistant Athletic Director Countywide effective September 13, 2017 with

a mutually agreed upon salary of $3,000 yearly

2. Mickey Skeens – Assistant Athletic Director Countywide effective September 13, 2017

a mutually agreed upon salary of $3000 yearly

3. Keith Greene – Athletic Director Countywide with a mutually agreed upon salary of $5850

yearly

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

Brad Shingler moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve the following correction to

the agenda for January 31:

Marlo Hornsby – Occupational Therapist ½ time for $30,000 yearly

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

Shane Brown moved and Brad Shingler seconded to approve fundraisers for Burnsville

Elementary, Davis Elementary, Frametown Elementary, Sutton Elementary, BCMS and BCHS.

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

A discussion was held regarding the formation of the Educational Cooperative (EC) for

Braxton County.

Brad Shingler moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve the Fishing Club at BCHS.

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

Superintendent Dilly reported on the deeds for school properties, Kindergarten snack and

Sam’s Club memberships. Leatha Williams reported on the Assessment Data for 2016-17.

Brad Shingler moved and Shane Brown seconded to adjourn.

Vote: Unanimous. Motion carried.

The meeting adjourned at 7:38 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the Braxton County Board of Education will be held on Tuesday,

September 26, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at 98 Carter Braxton Drive, Sutton.
