Counselor Education Department Meeting

November 1, 2012

In attendance: David Van Doren, Jeff Cook, Brenda O’Beirne (Chair), Cindy Anderton, Jennifer Betters-Bubon, Anene Okocha, Krista Kim, Don Norman (recording).

1. Approval of minutes (Oct. 25th, 2012) on a Cook/Betters-Bubon motion, 2nd; all approved.

2. Admission’s process/committee work. There were nineteen applicants reviewed. Fourteen will be invited for admissions to our program for a summer/fall 2013 start. Faculty will move forward with POS for applicants. The discussion was had re. sending a letter to applicants to get affirmation of acceptance of offer, and then construct POS. This discussion was tabled for consideration in the spring admissions cycle. POS will be completed by 11/8, ready to go out with acceptance letters. Faculty will meet Monday afternoon 11/5, 2 pm, in the conference room to work on POS. Faculty should bring the updated course schedules (sent out this week) to facilitate work.

3. Advisory Council meeting/agenda/discussion: Council meeting will be 11/9, 10 AM – 1 PM. Brenda disseminated a proposed agenda. Under “highlights” subsection, faculty should review and be prepared to speak to this topic. Meeting will take place in 3002. Lunch will be provided by the department, with cost shared by faculty. Other menu items were added and will be provided by department/staff members.

4. Clinical updates

a) Internship sections – David will send out proposed sections when all files are returned. There was one intern applicant with special concerns that may require further review. Faculty when reviewing possible sections should share with David if there are possible concerns re. pairings, etc.

b) Date for internship workshop (preparing for interviews) – 11/28, Wed. afternoon, 4:15 – 5:15 PM, is the date/time. Faculty members are asked to participate. Students entering internship the following fall should attend.

c) Update from Krista re. EMS - training for EMS will take place Jan. 15thfor Brenda/David and Krista in the morning; faculty training 1 – 5 PM the same day; Jan. 16th, 8:30 – full day training; Jan. 17th, 8:30 – 12 noon, continued training.

d) January 17th will the practicum workshop, 4 – 7 PM.

5. Student concerns/review of progress: Discussions had.

6. Committee updates–deferred; in general it will be important for all faculty members to stay updated re. the various committee assignments and work done by colleagues, and to get feedback/give feedback on related work.

7. Professional development workshops for spring – faculty members are asked to consider possible content areas and interests for spring workshops. Which faculty members will lead /organize these workshops?

8. Follow-up from NCACES – deferred.

9. Update from Administrative Council – The Dean is willing to take a request forward re. starting times variances.
