COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Students will experience planning, implementing, and evaluating research and programs.

INTRODUCTION:

Counseling Research is an introductory level graduate course which is designed to provide the learner with knowledge of the terminology, symbols, and methods employed in research. Further, this course focuses on the development of a fundamental level of research design necessary for interpreting and completing basic small-scale research and evaluation projects.

Creswell, J.H.(2008). Educational Research: Planning, Conducting, and Evaluating Quantitative and Qualitative Research.3rd. ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson.

COURSE OJECTIVES:

By the completion of this course the successful student will be able to:

  1. Recognize and define the key terms associated with reading and conducting basic educational research.
  2. Read, understand, and discuss in written form at least four recent education research articles.
  3. Design and present in written form a research proposal to investigate a current issue related to counseling.
  4. Develop a full understanding of the use of APA style in the development of manuscripts.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS & GRADING:

  1. Quizzes - 8 at 5 points each (40 points). An in class quiz will be given each class on the readings assigned for that class period. No make up quizzes will be given.
  2. Tests - 4 at 10 points each (40 points). Each test will be composed of an article from the current research literature. After reading the article, answer the questions at the end of the article. Tests will be administered as a "take home" test, with one week for completion. 1 point will be removed for each business day the test is late.
  3. Research Project - (20 points). Each student is expected to participate in a semester long research project. Although designed by the facilitator, the topic or topics will be selected by class members. By the end of the semester a research report summarizing the findings must be completed. Students will work in small teams of 4 to 6 students.
