BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS

1. Consistent Respect.

This means mutual respect between you and your teachers, between you and your peers, from us to you, from you to us, from you to each other, from all of us toward all our stuff, from all of us toward anyone we know… etc. That means, avoid:

Insults

Interrupting someone who is talking

Taking without asking, touching without permission, etc.

Wandering the room at anytime

Ignoring directions

Etc.

2. Do not gather by the door.

This is a fire hazard, and it just gets messy.

Stay by your desk if the lesson for the day is done.

SCOPE OF CLASS

The goal of this class is to continue with American history, from

For each unique cultural region and time period in Europe, we’ll be looking at:

  1. Is history one person’s opinion?
  2. How have social, economic, and technological change shaped America?
  3. How has the search for liberty and equality affected the development of American society?
  4. How do a country and its citizens handle conflict, cooperation, and adversity?
  5. How do current issues of today connect us to the past and allow us to see developing trends?

These are what is called “essential questions.”

Likely, you can answer all of them for American History. Some version will be created for each lesson, and we’ll start and finish each lesson looking at them, and seeing if they were answered by the lesson of the day.

Example (for each):

  1. What is the best way to find the “real” truth when searching for history documents?
  2. Describe America today, including at least one social, one economic and one technological reference.
  3. What is the best way for Americans to find true justice?
  4. What is the best way to handle a mob?
  5. Look at the past and see how “current events” of the past still affect us today. For example: why might we have stop signs? Why do airports have such strict policies? Why does CR South have consequences for being late?

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  1. Pencil and eraser AND a pen
  2. Highlighters (yellow, and another color)
  3. A folder system (so you can hold onto handouts) OR a three ring binder
  4. Composition book

Homework

Expect homework Monday through Wednesday, and a quiz on what we learned that week on Friday.

Homework will usually be questions out of the book, map locating, reading primary source documents, etc.

YOUR FIRST HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:

Send me an e-mail from your own account, the one you’ll check daily.

I will use this to create a distro list for your class.

I will blast out assignments, notices, test hints, etc. en masse. So, if you do NOT do this HW assignment, you may miss out on important info.

GRADING POLICY

Your grade…

As the marking period progresses, I'll provide you with grade updates.

A = 90%-100%

B = 80% to just below 90%

C = 70% to just below 80%

D = 60% to just below 70%

F = below 60%

Our grading system used by our school (called E-School Plus, which generates the HAC (Home Access Center)) actually does a “round up” thing. That means 89.5% will round up to an A-, and so on. So, you can count on that.

Extra Credit

Various opportunities will appear.

Take advantage of them, and your grade will climb FAST.

Late work

If you're late with any assignment, you lose 10% for the first late day

20 more % the second late day (that's 30%)

30 more % the third day (that's 60%)

40 more % beyond three days (0%)

Being absent from school is NOT an excuse for lateness; your assignment is due regardless of excuses unless I clear the lateness ahead of time. This is a good reason to contact me via internet of cell phone. Otherwise, if you are absent, I will just assume you didn’t plan well, and are hoping to use your absence as a crutch.

GRADES EACH MARKING PERIOD WILL COME FROM:

Tests = 100 points each (approx)

Quizzes = 5-20 points each

Class work = 10-20 points each

Homework = 10-20 points each

Projects = 50-100 points

Absent

If you're absent on the day of a test, be ready the day you return to take it.

If you're absent on the day an assignment is due, have it ready on the day of your return.

I always make a few extra of handouts.

All extra handouts will be placed in the bins in the back of the room. Look for the bin stack labeled “American History.” Go down to the day(s) you missed, and BAM, the handouts will be there waiting for you!
