WHEREAS: The City recently established a committee to assist with the planning and programming of a multiple use area in the establishment of the Fresh Pond Master Plan; and

WHEREAS: The plan recognized that there are a variety of users, which at times are at logger heads, and the need to come together; and

WHEREAS: Fresh Pond is a jewel that was created over a century ago; and

WHEREAS: The City established a new jewel in the last quarter of the previous century, in the creation of Danehy Park; and

WHEREAS: Danehy Park has both passive and active users, and was designed for the same; now therefore be it

ORDERED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to create a committee for planning and programming at Danehy Park; and be it further

ORDERED: That said committee should include, but not be limited to, the following:

·  Active users;

·  Passive users; and

·  Abutters

WHEREAS: This day the City Council honors the late Alvin E. Thompson, a dearly beloved son of Cambridge, as well as a respected city father; and

WHEREAS: Alvin was a lifelong resident of Cambridge; he graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School, attended the New England School of Anatomy and Embalming and Roxbury Community College; and

WHEREAS: From 1957 to 1999, Alvin served honorably in the United States National Guard; and

WHEREAS: Alvin was past president and a life member of the Cambridge NAACP. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, and a former vestry member of
St. Barthlomew’s Episcopal Church in Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: From 1988 to 1998, Alvin served as a legislator of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he was past Chair of the Transportation Committee, Vice Chair of the Rules Committee and a member of the National Caucus of Black Legislators. He also worked for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), and after thirty years of public service, he retired from that position; and at the time of his death, he was director of Elder Affairs for the Registry of Motor Vehicles; and

WHEREAS: Earlier in his career Alvin also served the City of Cambridge as the Community Relations Officer; and

WHEREAS: On April 26, 2000, Alvin passed away suddenly, at the age of 60; and

WHEREAS: First and foremost in all of his positions and community activities, Alvin was a “bridge-builder” who never stopped trying (and usually succeeding) to help the people who most needed help; and

WHEREAS: Alvin’s legacy lies in the results of his steadfast and unwavering commitment to children, including his key role in the establishment of the Benjamin Banneker Charter School, where young minority children are now excelling in the areas of math, science and technology; and

WHEREAS: Alvin’s legacy also lies in the lives of all his devoted and extended surviving family, his beloved wife Gloria G. (Grant) Thompson; his children Alvin B., and his wife, Zana M. of Atlanta, Georgia; Hilton E., and his wife, Tia of Cambridge; Hilary W. of Cambridge; two grandchildren LeTaire and Jeciena; his chosen son, Michael Cox; devoted brother
George L., and his wife Mary of Bridgewater; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Maines of Randolph, Claudine Bhatti, and her husband Majed of Somerville, Ruby Braxton, his god-daughter and her husband, Thomas of Boston; his Aunt Beryl Boxill of New York; his nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of relatives, dear friends and co-workers; and

WHEREAS: Alvin E. Thompson’s untimely death was mourned by the entire Cambridge Community;

and

WHEREAS: Alvin E. Thompson served the City of Cambridge with honor and distinction as an employee of the School Department, a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives; and an active member of our community; and

ORDERED: That the City Council go on record placing and dedicating a monument on River Street between Franklin and Green Street in honor of Alvin E. Thompson; and be it further

ORDERED: That the City Clerk prepare a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution for presentation to the Thompson family at the dedication ceremony on September 28, 2002 on behalf of the entire City Council.

WHEREAS: It is well documented how much the spouses of our veterans have sacrificed during all of our nation's armed conflicts; and

WHEREAS: The spouses of our veterans played a critical role in all our nations victories by supplying our troops overseas while simultaneously raising families without the support of their spouses who were on active duty; and

WHEREAS: Currently it is not possible for spouses of veterans to be buried with their loved ones in a veteran's plot at the Cambridge Cemetery; and

WHEREAS: In the Bourne Cemetery and the two new veteran's cemeteries in Winchendon and Agawam it is possible for veterans to be buried with their spouse; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to direct the Acting Commissioner of Public Works, the Superintendent of the Cambridge Cemetery and the Director of Veterans Services to study the feasibility of changing the policy of the Cambridge Cemetery to allow the cremated remains of widowed spouses to be buried in Veterans plots; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to report back to the City Council the result of said study by December 3, 2001.
