Council Meeting – March 17, 2016

Mayor Thomas L. Hardesty called the regular meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. with the following council members present: Bobby Andriot, Mike Zoeller, Donna Eaton, Shane Suttor, Jon Swindler, and Frank Page.

City Employees Present: Bryan Slone, Fred Rogers, Kevin Baker, Jennifer Herrell, Candice Selph, Austin Sasser, and Inez Harris.

City Attorney: Steven Gregory

Invocation: Jeremy Cloninger, Youth Minister, Living Waters Church

All present pledged allegiance to the flag.

Minutes/March 3, 20116

Councilmember Page moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of March 3, 2016 as read by council members prior to the meeting. Seconded by Councilmember Zoeller.

All voted “aye” and motion carried.

Proclamation – Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Day – March 29, 2016

Mayor Hardesty read a proclamation declaring March 29, 2016 as Vietnam Veterans Appreciation Day in the City of Shelbyville recognizing Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifices during the Vietnam War from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975 and urged our citizens to take the time to thank our veterans. (There were members of the local VFW#1179 in the audience.)

Department Reports

Jennifer Herrell, Public Works Superintendent/Engineer, reported there will be two meetings on Tuesday, March 22nd at City Hall and March 29th at Fire Station 1 regarding the Stormwater Master Plan. City residents will have an opportunity to ask questions concerning stormwater drainage or flooding. The meetings will start at 7:00 p.m. Mrs. Herrell and Bret Clark will have a booth at the Chamber Showcase this weekend for residents to view and ask questions. The large Christmas tree in Veterans Park is gone. It has been replaced with a much smaller tree that is more compatible to our area and be much easier to decorate.

Candice Selph, Human Resource Director, reported 3 police officers have been hired and will be starting in April. She is working with Bryan Slone getting seasonal help for Weissinger and working on reports for the Affordable Health Care Act.

Fire Chief Kevin Baker reported the department is in the middle of inspection season. Inspections are going much better than last year. They will have a booth at the Chamber Showcase looking for volunteer recruits this weekend.

Bryan Slone, Golf Pro Manager, reported on the process of hiring seasonal help. Also, along with the Country Club and the Park, he will be sharing a booth at the Chamber Showcase this weekend highlighting golf in the city and county. The Chili Scramble is set for March 26th.

Fred Rogers, Historic District, reported people are asking about the matching funds program. He already has a list of applicants for next year.

Mayor’s Report

Mayor Hardesty reported the Chamber Showcase will be this weekend at Shelby County High School in the gym area. Roll Forming will received two prestigious awards from the Governor’s Office on March 24th for Safety in the aerospace building and the automotive building. March 30th, the Family Activity Center will be celebrating their 16th year anniversary. The public is invited. Judith Smith will retire with 37years of service and Peggy Thompson with 9 yearsof service at the end of the month.

At 6:50 p.m. Councilmember Suttor moved to adjourn. Seconded by Councilmember Zoeller.
