VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON COUNCIL ELECTIONOF xx MEMBERS BY THE COURT OF CONVOCATIONPERMANENT ACADEMIC/GENERAL STAFF
Conducted under the VUW Council Elections Statute
INSTRUCTIONS TO VOTERS

There are xx vacancies to be filled at this election.

You must vote for at least one candidate.

You may vote for two or more candidates or for all candidates.

Exercise your right to vote by writing:

The number “1” opposite the candidate you most want to be elected

The number “2” opposite the candidate of your second choice

The number “3” opposite the candidate of your third choice

The number “4” opposite the candidate of your fourth choice,

and so on until you are indifferent as between the candidates whom you have not marked.

Your vote will have maximum effect if you number, in order of your preference, all candidates except those you do not wish to be elected.

Lower preferences are taken into account only if your higher preferences have more votes than they need in order to be elected, or if your higher preferences are excluded through inadequate support. In no circumstances can a lower preference count against a higher preference.

The voting document will be rejected as informal:

(a)  In the case of a postal vote, if the envelope in which it was received does not have your name and address on the back;

(b)  if it has not been received by the Returning Officer by the time of the closing of the poll;

(c)  if it does not clearly indicate the candidate or candidates for whom you wish to vote;

(d)  if it contains any means by which you may be identified;

(e)  if the number “1” is marked opposite the name of more than one candidate;

(f)  if the number “1” is not marked opposite the name of one candidate.

The voting document will not be rejected as informal but:

If you indicate your preferences other than solely by numbers, the voting document will be set aside as exhausted after preference “1” or after the preferences indicated by a sequence of numbers beginning with “1”.

If you use a number more than once or omit a number from a sequence of preferences, the voting document will be set aside as exhausted immediately before preferences indicated by that number are considered.

When you have marked your order of preference for the candidates for whom you wish to vote, place the voting document in the envelope provided, then write your name and address on the dotted lines provided on the back of the envelope and return it to the Returning Officer, Victoria University of Wellington not later than 5 p.m. on the …...day of...... 20.....
