JOB PURPOSE
To devise, continually develop, and manage the delivery of, the heritage exhibition element of the Pioneering Canterbury project at The Marlowe Kit, interpreting the collections, bringing Canterbury’s literary heritage to life and making the collections accessible to a wide audience.
Pioneering Canterbury is part of the East Kent Pioneering Places project which aims to strengthen networked arts, culture and heritage within the place, leading to a more prominent role for culture in meeting local social and economic priorities. All Pioneering Canterbury posts will work to support the delivery of the East Kent Pioneering Places aims.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
●To develop, plan and deliver the curatorial aspects of The Marlowe Kit and the Pioneering Canterbury programme;
●To re-interpret the presentation of relevant collections with a particular emphasis upon Christopher Marlowe and Canterbury’s broader literary heritage, creating accessible and engaging displays and interpretation;
●To champion the use of the collections to celebrate Canterbury and literature, and to inspire the creation of new work, including performance and writing;
●To work alongside the Pioneering Canterbury Digital Producer, identifying key artefacts and collections for inclusion within the Digital Suite archive, making collections accessible digitally and using them as a resource for audiences to respond to;
●To work in partnership with a range of heritage and cultural partners to deliver the Pioneering Canterbury project and the redevelopment of The Marlowe Kit;
●To work with the Canterbury Museums & Galleries Collections Manager, who is the custodian of the collections, to ensure that standards of collections are are maintained.
●To work with the Collections Manager to secure ACE Accreditation for The Marlowe Kit
●To work closely with the Pioneering Canterbury Collections Assistant in undertaking a collections review of material which is currently on display within The Marlowe Kit, ensuring that any material which is retained aligns with CCC’s Collections Development Policy generally, and specifically with the purposes of The Kit;
●To manage curatorial/heritage volunteers for the project;
●To work with and support the project’s communications and marketing team to ensure that the value of the collections is maximised and marketed to a wide audience, through a range of marketing platforms, including digital;
●To manage budgets as appropriate;
●To support the gathering and evaluation of customer feedback, continuously monitoring, reviewing and developing the exhibitions to ensure delivery of the Pioneering Canterbury desired outcomes as part of broader project and department team;
REQUIRED ATTRIBUTES
Knowledge / ●Knowledge of history and literature with a demonstrable interest in the early modern period and other period and writing relevant to literary development in the region
●Knowledge of best practice in collections management and applying for and securing loans of national significance
●An understanding of best practice and current thinking in audience development
●Good knowledge and understanding of culture and heritage policy and practice in a local, regional and national context
●Some knowledge of Arts Council England’s Accreditation Scheme.
Skills / ●Creative thinking with the ability to be imaginative and innovative with regard to collections and access to collections
●Excellent project management skills
●Partnership working with a collaborative style
●Good organisational skills
●Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to write fluently and clearly in an accessible style for a wide range of different audiences.
Experience / ●Experience in developing, proposing and implementing innovative ideas
●Experience of expressing innovative ideas through displays, print and digital
●Can provide a minimum of two examples of how they have provided innovative access to collections
●Experience of curating museum exhibitions/ displays (can provide at least two examples)
●Experience of managing and motivating volunteers
●Ability to manage own workload, completing tasks to deadline
Qualifications / ●GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English at Grade C or above;
●A relevant degree, professional qualification or equivalent experience.
