Corporate Social Responsibility Report 2010

In 2008 Intec (UK) Ltd launched its first statement of commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

Having been involved in the local community and being committed to environmental issues for many years, it was believed that this be formalised in terms of policy and strategy. The senior management team came up with several areas where they believed Intec (UK) Ltd could commit to giving something back to the community and society as a whole. Amongst the areas identified were to support local charities via corporate fundraising activities, ensure all recruitment initiatives fell in line with the company diversity policy as well as other notable activities detailed below.

Brunel House

In 2006 Intec (UK) Ltd purchased a brown-field site in Heysham, Lancashire in order to build a modern, environmentally friendly, purpose built office complex. In December 2007, the building was ready for occupancy and completed with the following features aimed at significantly reducing the organisations carbon footprint:

  • A 15 kW wind turbine, allowing us to harness natural energy and provide circa 25% of the building’s energy needs.
  • Roof mounted solar panels to create 80% of the offices hot water for the building.
  • AAA rated energy efficient IT and electrical office equipment.
  • Building Management System;air handling units providing temperedair flow ensuring the internal temperature is uniform throughout.
  • Sensor activated lighting ensuring internal lighting does not remain on when rooms are vacant.
  • A vegetable plot which provides fresh, organic supplies to be used by the staff canteen, reducing the number of food miles used by the organisation.
  • Chicken coop for our ten hens that provide one egg per day each
  • Recycling points of all paper, plastic and aluminium products used within the building.
  • Cycle racks, showers and changing facilities making it more attractive for employees to cycle to work.
  • Zip Hydrotap (chilled and boiling water) Dispensers which uses 9%, 20% and 28% less energy when in continuous, sleep and timed modes than a traditional kettle
  • Dyson Hand Dryers which are amongst the most efficient on the market (due to no heating element and shorter run times)and reduce waste from paper towels

Initiative / Result
A 15 kW wind turbine, allowing us to harness natural energy and provide circa 25% of the building’s energy needs. / In 2010 Intec (UK) Ltd used 108,497kW. The wind turbine generated 30,000 kW, therefore, this demonstrates 27.66% reduction in demand
Roof mounted solar panels to create 80% of the offices hot water for the building. / In 2010 solar panels generated 86% of the offices hot water requirements.
Recycling points of all paper, plastic and aluminium products used within the building. Aim to reduce office waste to landfill by 10% / In 2010 we reduced our office waste to landfill by 12% and now aiming for 0% waste to landfill in 2011

Recruitment

Part of the Velosi Group - with over 66% of the Board of Directors in the B.A.M.E. category - Intec (UK) Ltd makes a conscientious effort to follow guidelines set in our Diversity Policy in recruiting staff from a diverse workforce. A questionnaire is now issued to all applicants for work through Intec (UK) Ltd, requesting information on ethnic and social background. The analysis of this data is for internal use only and allows us to monitor our performance against our diversity policy.

Intec (UK) Ltd was assessed in 2008 by Diversity Assured and are registered with the Diversity Works for London Organisation.

In line with our company supplier and recruitment diversity policy, we monitor all applicants and registrations. Where possible we advertise within ethnically and geographically targeted publications as well as utilising the geographical reach of our 63 offices across the globe. Although information on ethnicity and cultural background is monitored and reviewed this is not shown on our internal database and hence neither clients nor consultants can include these factors when selecting candidates.

In addition tothe above we have taken a different stance on our internal recruitment policy. Traditionally Intec (UK) Ltd has recruited staff from graduate level upwards as it was believed some of the more complex engineering criteria involved in our service delivery would come easier to graduates. In 2008, this stance was relaxed and employees without degree level qualifications were recruited and settled comfortably into their roles. Intec (UK) Ltd also recruited a Modern Apprentice backed by the government initiative. During the summer we had three work experience placement students from the local high school. This commitment to training and developing local people has benefits to the community as a whole and allows students an insight into the work environment and introducing them to technical and engineering recruitment.

Charitable Causes

£34,642 was raised by the staff of Intec (UK) Ltd during 2010. The beneficiaries of the fundraising activities were St John’s Hospice Lancaster, Children of Chernobyl, The Lune Scholarship Fund, Morecambe Bay Maritime Volunteer Service and RNIB, Lancashire Community Engagement Officers, Heysham High School Hockey Team,Sports Relief, Red Nose Day,Jeans for Genes, Wear it Pink (Breast Cancer) and Clifton Cricket Club.

Members of staff completed a sponsored Moonlight March around the Lancaster and Morecambe district raising money for St John’s Hospice completing the route just after dawn. Intec (UK) Ltd also sponsored two semi-inflatable RIB vessels for the Maritime Volunteer Service, who assist the coastguard in search and rescue missions within Morecambe Bay.

Members of Intec (UK) Ltd sponsored and attended a “Moulin Rouge” themed charity dinner in aid of the Lune Scholarship fund. This charity raises funds to support local children attending Lancaster Royal Grammar School and is widely supported by businesses throughout the area.

In thethird year of having a documented Corporate Social Responsibility policy, Intec (UK) Ltd has seen growing commitment from all employees to achieving the aims set out in the statement. It is our aim to further develop this policy during 2011 and to increase our involvement in the local community. We also intend to continuously review and adapt our environmental policy to take into account changes in best practice and developments in technology. The senior management team will meet on a bi-annual basis to monitor and review our performance against the commitments we have made in this policy.
