Visit to The Temple Church, London EC4Y 7BB

Thursday, 29 June 2017 at 11.30am

Located between Fleet Street and the Thames, The Temple Church is a late 12th century church built by the Knights Templar as their English headquarters. Amongst other purposes it was originally used for Templar initiation ceremonies when new recruits entered the building via the western door at dawn. It is jointly owned by the Inner Temple and Middle Temple Inns of Court, bases of the English legal profession. As a church it serves the two Inns’ members and staff and all who work in The Temple area, as well as holding services on Sundays. Regular organ music and choir recitals are held here; the Temple Choir is known and respected for its high level of performance and is considered to be one of the finest choirs in London. The well-known recording of ‘Hear My Prayer’ by boy soloist Ernest Lough in 1927 originated from here.

The church building comprises two separate sections – the Round and the Chancel. The Round Church was designed to recall the holiest place in the Crusaders’ world which was the circular Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Following an agreement in 1608 by King James I the two Inns were granted use of the church in perpetuity on condition that they support and maintain it and they continue to use it as their ceremonial chapel. The church escaped damage in The Great Fire of London though was still refurbished by Christopher Wren. Heavily damaged by bombing during World War II it has since been greatly restored and rebuilt and was designated a Grade I listed building in 1950. Temple Church came to public attention a few years ago with Dan Brown’s novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’ with a scene set inside the building, which was subsequently shot in the church for the film which followed.

Our visit to Temple Church will begin with a talk and we will then be free to explore the building ourselves.
