Peter Hayes + Sutton Taylor

Two Ceramic Masters

Sunday,21st May 2017 – 10.30am- 4pm Ladock Village Hall, Ladock

Peter Hayes

“My main aim in my work is not to compete with nature;but for the work to evolve within the environment”

Peter has always been interested in the history of ceramics – why and how ‘things’ are made of clay. From his extensivetravelsin Africa, India, Nepal, Japan and New Mexicoand contact with local potters Peter has adopted the ideas picked up and incorporated them in his own work.

In Peter’s well known large scale ceramic forms, placed in the landscape, he hasintroduced other minerals into the Raku ceramic surface such as iron and copper enabling the elements of time and erosion to develop the surface of individual pieces.

Recently Peter discovered Udaipur in Rajasthan where he goes for inspiration, when his studio in Bath gets cold in the winter. This has introduced him to other artists and craftsmen enabling him to work with a range of different materials, such as glass, marble, stone and Damascus steel. For Peter, it is the material that is in charge and it will only let you make what it wants and when he pushes it to its limit, somehow equilibrium is made between maker and material. ------Sutton Taylor

Sutton Taylor is renowned internationally for his beautiful and highly individual ceramics. His vibrant, luminous work follows in the long history of lustre glazed pottery, which originated in 9th-century Mesopotamia and is known for its opulence and iridescence. Sutton, however, has made his own mark on this elusive technique, finding the means to create a palette of unprecedented range and richness. An exponent of truly exquisite works of art.

Since 1995 Sutton Taylor has lived and worked in westernmost Cornwall, where the magical light and landscape that inspired some of the 20th century’s greatest painters is also the inspiration for his ceramics.

We are lucky to have both these very different ceramic masters present their work and inspiration at the CCGG.
