Sponsored by the Program in International Agriculture of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture, and Development (CIIFAD) with the collaboration of host institutions in Mexico: The Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY), The Universidad Veracruzana (UV), and the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas Y Pecuarias (INIFAP). They provided excellent field laboratories for the study of soils, crops, and animals in farming systems under the wide range of ecological, social, and economic conditions. 8/6/2005 – 8/22/2006: Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow in the International Program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (IP/CALS), Cornell University, U.S.A.

Program’s main support came from the United States Congress through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State. Through a cooperative agreement, the Institute of International Education (IIE) assists ECA with administration of the Program. Its purpose was to bring accomplished professionals from selected countries to the United States at a midpoint in their careers for a year of non-degree study and related practical professional experiences. Through courses, seminars, professional visits and affiliations, and discussions with professionals in the U.S., I updated my career and leadership skills.

Coursework: Development Sociology, Agroecosystems, Economic Development and the Environment, etc. Program coordinator was Dr. Terry Tucker from IP/CALS. Program advisor was Dr. Gary C. Bergstrom in Plant Pathology Department.

4/11/2005 – 7/16/2005: Visiting Scholar in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences and the Department of Entomology & Wildlife Ecology, University of Delaware, U.S.A.

Project was sponsored by the National Import and Export Foreign Experts Bureau in Beijing, China.

Coursework: Diagnostic Plant Pathology, Entomology, Principles of Animal and Plant Genetics, and a field trip for studying crop diseases and pests. Program advisors were Dr. Thomas A. Evans in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences and Dr. Clifford Keil in the Department of Entomology & Wildlife Ecology.

Experience:

9/1/1983 – present: Senior Agro-engineer, Vice Director of the Plant Protection Station, Agricultural Technology Extension and Service Center, Anqing Suburban Agricultural Bureau, Anqing City, Anhui Province, China.

Much of the work was associated with sociology and related to the study and research on agricultural production, policy making, business, marketing, increasing farmers’ income, promoting sustainable development, and improving the agricultural production systems in Anqing Suburb, Anqing City.

·Integrated management of harm by pests, disease, weeds and mice to the crops; promoted proper and advanced technologies to the farmers; evaluated cultural, biological, and chemical disease control strategies as a component of integrated crop management; commended by the directors of other agricultural organization for the quality and significance of my research.

·Conducted farmers’ training, education, demonstration and extension, and monitored quality, impact, and outcomes of these practices.

·Collected and compiled data for a government report on farm structure, farming practices, and the organization of farmers’ industry in order to establish a suitable government policy.

·Examined difficulties of rural farmers in agricultural production and marketing; studied land tenure and land reform, rural migration, and agricultural credit systems.

·Directed and supervised Plant Quarantine in my district, directed the general investigation for quarantined plant diseases, supervised the general investigation of weed varieties.

·Chaired the dragon-boat festival to attract investment and trade to promote economic development, assisted in the World Bank funding investments in my province.

·Participated in government subsidies funding project, improved people’s quality of life.

·Adopted sustainable strategies in agricultural production, protected agro-ecosystem, identified policies that promote sustainable systems and protect the environment.
