Requirements 5:
Shoes
1. 1 pair of formal shoes is a must.
2. 1 pair of sports shoes.
3. U need rain resistant flip flop kinda shoes/strap shoes with velcro. unless u buy the adidas or the puma types, these shoes find it hard to survive the torture of goa rains plus moving arnd the hilly campus. i personally needed 2 sets of those for an yr.
4. Try to avoid wearing slippers to class. They are the best bet for the beaches!!! Get one of those cool funky jazzy colorful ones.
5. Bathroom slippers are meant for bathroom only.
6. For the football enthusiasts, u might brng studs but i wud rather suggest u buy from here. carry less.
7. i really cant comment much on girls shoes coz even if i tell them not to brng more than 3 pairs i am sure they will bring at least 5!!(NOM)
8. SAC will tell u in details wen u arrive as to what u can wear to class and what not.
9. Goa is a fully developed state. U can buy shoes of any kind here! there is municipal market at panjim where u can bargain like crazy and get good slippers and shoes, there are also bata,adidas,puma-all big stores. even sanquelim local shops sell all kinda shoes!
( To walk in the rains, jelly shoes, crocs, floaters are the best !!! No no to oshos.)
(And I will suggest less stilettos as eventually all "parties" end up at the beach... so walking becomes an issue plus you dont wanna lose them! Get one/two basic pairs)
(Formal shoes mein you can wear heels/flats in basic black.Preferably closed toed. If you are not vertically challenged like a few of us... I will suggest wear flats... very comfortable to run about or stand for hours.)
Requirements 6:
Medicines/Medical Facilities
- Get your daily medicines. Keep them handy.
- There are no 24 hr medicine shop in Sanquelim.
- Keep at least a few basic medicines with you always.
- PRAYAS keeps a few basic medicines with them but those are more injury oriented stuff.
- There is a doctor who comes to campus on weekdays from 5-7pm.
- In case of emergency, we prefer going to the primary health care at Sanquelim. Its pretty decent. Might give you a strong dose at times, but makes sure you heal pretty quickly. And being govt. thng its free too.
- There is a very good dentist at Sanquelim too.
- For anythn serious we go to Panjim - places like Vintage or others. Or the best place is GMC(Goa Medical College).
- Medical facilities in Goa are not the best in the country. But decent enough if you dont have a very srs ailment.
- I just hope that none of you guys ever need to refer to this post.
- Take care of urslf and ur frnds!!!! (If any of you are bringing a complete medical box ensure that you have different Packs for medicines needed for different ailments. For Eg. Have one Pack for Medicines related to Throat Infection, Another Pack say related to Stomach Ailments and so on. Use Brown Paper packs and label them clearly.
Why I am suggesting this is for the simple reason that few months down the line you won't remember which medicine is for what purpose ! And that such times its better to trust what your doctor said months back while prescribing the medicines rather than Google !)
Requirement 7
1. There will be a vendor coming on day 1 with one common room full of stuff.
2. Stuff includes mattresses(ranging from 600-3500 bucks), buckets, mugs, doormats, hangers, cushions, soap dishes, brooms and what not.
3. If you buy from this guy, prices will be a bit on the steeper side. But then the pain of buying something downhill and carrying it up is a bit too much.
4. I would suggest however if u want to save some bucks, get the mattress from this guy and buckets and all can be bought from Sanquelim.
5. Vodafone will also come on day 1 to sell sims. postpaid ones. campus calling free. trust me its a good deal unless u hv special ones!!!!even then its prty decent.
6. Idea will also come but prbly vodafone will have the 1st mover advantage.
7. For any other daily need stuff go straight to Jaggu bhaiyya(u will easily figure out who he is). Either he will have it, or he will get it for you in a day!!!
(whew!!!)
Apart from all the requirements, don't forget to bring the following with you:
1. Patience (Sometimes things won't seem 2 move your way no matter how hard u try)
2. Open mind
3. Sense of humour
4. A zeal for learning
Clothes:
•Cotton and easy to dry clothes (its hot & humid and rains a lot)
•Avoid bringing leather goods other than a pair of formal shoes and belts. (Leather gets fungus easily)
•Jackets/windcheaters (Sometimes people feel cold in classes)
•Slippers/Floaters (Water resistant footwear)
•Umbrella/raincoat (Is a must to face those never ending rains)
•Some beachwear (Its Goa ☺)
•Please get swim wear guys...we have a lovely swimming pool. Gals you would want to get a bathrobe too...
•Some party wear (Again Its Goa ☺☺)
•Formal Clothes (For presentations etc. formal shirts and trousers and for placement & Events like Samriddhi Plain Black Business Suit)
•For washing there is a laundry room in every hostel where there is a washing machine, a dryer and ironing boards
Not from seniors:
- Bedsheet
- Pillow
- Chaddar (for the hot summer days)
- Blanket (for the chilly rainy and winter nights)
- Towel
- Bottle (so the mid-night thirst breaks are not spent stumbling around in the dark searching for the cooler)
- Spoon and mug (if you do not want to run around like a frenzied rabbit trying to get a bite of the maggi or a sip of tea from others)
- Hangers (or crumpled clothes are going to be a beast to manage)
- Bucket and mug (not sure if they are provided to us…But hey a bucket can never go to waste!)
- Clothes-washing powder
- Toiletries (tooth brush, tooth paste, soap, deo, shampoo, hair oil, comb, nail cutter and whatever special things you’ll may use :P)
- Medicine Kit (you will get them there too, but always good to have some at hand for emergencies)
- Windcheater (umbrellas don’t really last long atop the hill)
- Warm Jacket (it might get cold sometimes)
- Track suit (for all gym fanatics)
- At least one formal attire (there are times you have to wear formals but not the uniform, e.g. during placements. So guys one jacket, shirts, tie and girls either a suit, skirt, salwar or saree)
- Moisturizer (the climate in Goa can be very dry and leave your skin feeling all rough and dry)
- Locks and Keys (yes, things sometimes, if very rarely, do get flicked from the rooms. So better safe than sorry)
- A bag (a sturdy one to carry your laptop and notes and such around the campus)
- Basic stationery (scissors, cellotape, pens, files… Why run around searching for some when you actually need it but don’t have it)
- Laptop (not sure of the specifications)
- Camera if possible (life at GIM is beautiful. Why miss the chance of SNAPPING it up? :D)
- Odomos or mosquito repellant (u nevr know wad hpens atop the hill)
- Get enough pairs of jeans, pants, shirts, kurtis, hostel clothes, underwear etc etc. (washing clothes everyday will be impossible, get enough to last through the week and leave the washing to Sundays (and mark all your clothes… Somethings do tend to get mixed up!))
- Large stock of good movies (watching movies in the theatre can get pretty expensive if done on a regular basis)
- Things to decorate your room with (after all, you will call it home for the next two years… Make it homey!)
- Shoes
- One pair of sports shoes
- One for everyday use (that can survive the rains and the continuous walking to and fro from the hostel to classes)
- One formal pair
- One pair of dressy fun casual shoes (for the times you go out)
- A table lamp is not a bad idea, especially if you have roommates who hit the sack by 11pm and your day/night begins at 2am!
- A pair of scissors is a MUST.
- It would be wise to carry a cooking utensil (pan or an electric kettle) if you have luggage space since the one at the hostel is for common use and let's just say that many people underestimate a good and clean scrub.
- Bring an old bedsheet to cover your suitcases, whether you put them on top of your cupboard or below your bed. (Dust issues)
- I believe in the power of a good fabric conditioner (Eezee or Comfort). More so during the rains when clothes dont dry and tend to smell foul (so much for that tiring wash!)
- Food from back home can be a savior many a time. Pickles, ghee, fried stuff, etc will help you tide by. (You get mango pickle in the mess all the time. So you may want to try other options.)
- A couple of boxes to store food items is a prudent choice. It also helps when you want to pack food from the mess and bring it to your room.
- A CLOTHES BASKET - This is especially for the ones who believe that their "dhobi self" works best on Sundays. You need a place to deposit soiled clothes! (NO! Your bed and chair have other functions)
- A thermos/flask for the ones who like their beverages hot.
- Couple of sets of ethnic attire (sarees, sherwanis, etc). You don't want to go on a scavenger hunt the previous night when you have a "dress-up" opportunity the next day.
- TT, Squash and badminton fans - you need to have your own equipment. Only the court is free.
- A flashlight to light your way up when you make the trip fromdown under at unholy hours!
- Speakers for the ones who believe in turning the decibels high.
- Iron (if its allowed)
- Guys. Bring in the guitars as well! we can have some jam sessions as well
