Requirements for my class:

Attitude:

¨  Positive attitude

¨  Know that you will make mistakes – learn from them but don’t be too hard on yourself

¨  Be willing to work for answers

¨  Students are expected to work in groups when asked to do so.

¨  Respectful language is required. Students must be nice to fellow students.

¨  Students are given opportunities at certain times to discuss problems and work in groups. This will be separate from instructional time when students are expected to be attentive listeners and note takers.

Academics:

¨  Students MUST spend time practicing at home and studying if they expect to do well.

¨  Help sessions are every Monday morning at 8:10 AM.

¨  I update Synergy regularly. Please keep an eye out for failing grades that I have entered but you have not seen.

¨  Homework will be given Monday night through Thursday night. Students will start homework in class each day in order to ask questions, but rarely have time to finish it. I don’t give homework over the weekend. If students are off task on Friday, then they may have to finish the classwork for homework. Answer keys for all homework assignments are posted on my blog. As part of their homework, they are expected to check their answers so that they can come to class and ask questions. My answer keys are always available during homeroom if students have any accessibility issues.

Procedures:

¨  Since this is a high school course, we move very quickly. I have asked students to have three tabs in their binder: notebook, graded papers and algebra fluency. Each time I give students a paper, I remind them where to put it. If organization is a challenge for your child, set time aside for them to make sure papers are where they should be. This course will not allow time for students to organize their notebooks in class. They should be able to find needed papers quickly. I number all papers for each unit. These numbers correspond to the numbers on the agenda I give them at the beginning of each unit.

¨  Students must have a composition book. This is where students are expected to take notes. These notes can be helpful when completing homework and studying for unit tests.

¨  The grade for this course will be recorded on your child’s high school transcript as a number grade but will not be figured into their GPA.

¨  There will be a midterm in December that counts 20% of first semester’s grade.

¨  The EOCT will be in May and counts for 20% of second semester’s grade.

Too often we give our children answers to remember rather than problems to solve.
