Contraceptive and Pregnancy Related Devices

Note: You will not be in your usual groups for this activity as we need groups of 7, please sit upon arrival at the table with the designated group number for this activity.

This practica will occur in three parts, product counseling, providing therapeutic recommendations and case discussion. The product counseling is designed to familiarize pharmacy students with the various contraceptive and pregnancy related devices in which a pharmacist is expected to provide counseling and education for patients. The therapeutic recommendations is to provide you practice in assessing patient information to determine the most appropriate contraceptive options and provide your evidence or reasoning for your recommendations. The case discussion will review the completed cases from part 2.

Therapeutic Recommendations and Case Discussion

Objectives

  1. Formulate patient specific recommendations for contraception based on based on individual patient findings and applying knowledge of foundational science; critically analyzing scientific literature; and interpreting standards, guidelines and best practices in safe and effective medication use.   2. Prepare viable alternative recommendations that are patient specific regarding contraception. (PITTPharmacy 3. Caregiver; 7. Problem Solver; 5. Health Promoter and Provider)

You will be provided a series of case vignettes involving situations in which the pharmacist (you) must assess and determine the most appropriate contraceptive method(s) to recommend. You will not be asking patients for further information. Based on the information provided you will write you recommendations and reason why or why not a particular methods is appropriate for the given scenario.

You will work in your groups assigned for this session and 5 points will be given for completing the activity.

Product Counseling

Objectives:

  1. Provide patient educationthrough practice of verbal communication of contraceptive and pregnancy related devices that are commonly purchased/dispensed in an community pharmacy. (PITTPharmacy 3. Caregiver; 8. Educator and Communicator)

This part of the practicum will consist of three parts; providing counseling on your assigned product, evaluating your colleague and an individual “quiz”. The point allotment will be 5 points for the assessment of your counseling and 5 points for the individual quiz. Quiz questions will be targeted at significant counseling points for the various products. The “quiz” may be completed during the counseling sessions.

Eight minutes will be allotted for each product counseling. Products will rotate between groups.

You will be responsible for counseling your group on your assigned contraceptive methodor pregnancy related device. The counseling should be performed in a professional manner as if speaking directly to an actual patient.Your group will serve as your patient. If you prefer, you may select one of your group mates to speak to directly. One of your group-mates will be assigned to evaluate your counseling.

By your name in the group grid below, you will find either an “A” or “B”. This indicates the group of contraceptive and pregnancy related devices that you should come prepared to the practicum in which to counsel your group. You will only counsel on one of the items, which will be revealed to you at the practicum. Information is provided under each item below to help give a frame of reference for your counseling if needed. You will not be interviewing a patient for further information. As you would have available in the pharmacy, the product and package information will be available for you. Note:The product information is not intended to be read, but is available as a guide to assist in teaching your patient.You may not utilize a prepared script or class notes, but may have a note card with reminders of important points to discuss to aid you.

2 points will be deducted if you are > 10 minutes late.

A PITT Form is not required for this activity.

Direct your counseling to a 32 yo female who would like an OTC contraceptive that she can utilize, but is not interested in the female condom. She has no history of pelvic inflammatory disease or any contraindications to its use.

Ortho TriCyclen®

Direct your counseling to a 19 yo female who is starting a combination oral contraceptive for the first time.

First Response ® Ovulation Kit

Direct your counseling toward a 32 yo married female who has not been able to conceive with routine intercourse over the past year. The ovulation kit was suggested by her gynecologist to try for 3 months before she and her husband undergo fertility testing.

Plan B One Step®

Direct your counseling to a 19 yo female who comes to your pharmacy seeking Plan B One Step but she is afraid it is too late to take it. Upon discussion you find that she is in a monogamous relationship and the condom broke during intercourse last night (less than 12 hours ago). She has no medical history or regular medication use. She would also like to know if she can have a few to keep on hand incase this happens again.
