A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE FRED P STORRIE

IT WAS WITH GREAT SADNESS THAT THE COMMUNITY LEARNED OF THE PASSING OF FRED P STORRIE IN AUGUST 2013.

The Community Council wish to express their deepest sympathy to Laura and all the Storrie family and to Fred’s many lifelong friends in Howwood. Fred and Laura ran the General Store in Station Road for 35 years before retiring last year. Fred was well loved in the village not only for his service to the community via the shop but also for his community spirit and great generosity. Fred was publicly recognized for his service to the community and was also awarded for bravery in tackling an armed robber who tried to hold up the shop.

Fred was a founding member of Howwood Community Council and chaired the CC for three years. The CC continues to be effective to this day albeit in a different format.

Fred was a family man, a brother, husband, father, father-in-law and a proud grandfather. He was well known for his love of Scotland and enjoying all the benefits of her many waterways and hills. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

BROADBAND – BETTER BROADBAND FOR HOWWOOD CAMPAIGN

Thank you all very much for the terrific response to Douglas Alexander’s campaign for better broadband in Howwood. There was a 23% response ratefrom Howwood households which is unprecedented.

A public meeting was held on Thursday 12 September 2013 in the Church of Scotland. Howwood Community Council would like to thank villagersfor coming along to support this campaign. Over 200 people attended and as a result BT was made very awareof the level of dissatisfaction at the broadband service available in Howwood. The meeting was chaired by Douglas Alexander MP and he is to be congratulated not only for arranging the meeting but alsofor championing our cause. BT was represented by their top man in Scotland and two senior engineers all of whom bravely faced the angst of Howwood.A Scottish Government representativeand our local Councillors also attended the meeting and presented their views.

BT took away some service related issues and undertook to look at specific issues and advise uson these matters. In addition the BT representative is to allocate a direct email address to which Howwood residents may lodge specific service related complaints. Details of this email address will be published as soon as it is known. The Community Council urges you to email BT on your own specific issues when the address is published.

As to a date of when Howwood can expect to enjoy the same level of service as most of the country no date could be given due to commercial sensitivity at that time.

The aim is to have 96.4% of Renfrewshire premises upgraded to fibre broadband by 2017 and the whole country upgraded by 2020. It is not yet clear if Howwood is part of the 96.4%and if so when we are to be upgraded. On a positive note there is to be national communication on the rollout of fibre broadband with a website due to be launched by end of October 2013. Communication of expected rollout dates will be announced early 2014.

Another positive outcome of the meeting was that in answer to a question of why Howwood residents unfairly pay the same monthly BT line rental charge as someone with very high speed broadband BT and Mr Alexander undertook to raise this matter with the head of BT UK.

Further updates on this campaign will be made via hoowwood.com. so look out for these.

HEALTH ADVICE PROVIDED BY REACH PHARMACY

Health advice from Reach Pharmacy -Alzheimer's Disease

Q. Whatis Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia yet the exact causes are unknown. Dementia is a group of symptoms associated with a decline in the way the brain functions and these can affect an individual'smemory and behaviour. In this particular condition, there is a progressive loss of brain cells. The condition is most common in people over 65 years of age and affects slightly more women than men.

As it is a progressive condition, it will continue to worsen as it develops. Early symptoms include minor memory loss and/ or difficulty in saying the right words. Over time, these symptoms may lead to disorientation, and personality/ behavioural changes. There is no cure although medicines can slow down the condition in some people.

Q. How many people are there with dementia, including Alzheimer's, in the UK?

800,000

Q.What percentage of people with dementia have Alzheimer's?

62%

Q. Whatfactorsare believedto increase the risk of developing the condition?

Getting older; a family history of Alzheimer's; a historical severe head injury and lifestyle factors and conditions linked to vascular disease.

Q.What steps can I take that mighthelp to delay the onset of dementia?

Give up smoking (which the pharmacy can support with, through a free NHS scheme); cut down on alcohol; have a healthy, balanced diet; stay physically and mentally active.

According to the Alzheimer's Society there's growing evidence to suggest that some health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, may increase the risk of dementia. The pharmacy team can help you keep an eye on your blood pressure andrisk of developing diabetes, as well as advising you on weight management and weight loss.

Winter Flu - yes, it's that time of year again, so please make sure you get your flu vaccination from the pharmacy as soon as possible; this is available free to anyone in the at risk group (i.e. diabetics, asthmatics, the elderly). The flu vaccine will only be effective if you get it before any signs of flu; it is not effective if you get it after you've caught the germs that cause flu. Flu can be life threatening so please do not take any chances with your health this winter. Please ask the pharmacy team about the jab, which you will findis considerably cheaper than at other 'High Street' pharmacies.

WOODLAND TRUST GRANT

THE WOODLAND TRUST INVITED APPLICATIONS FROM COMMUNITY GROUPS FOR FREE TREE PACKS.

As in 2010/11Howwood Wildlife & Woodlands with the support of the Community Council applied for free trees from the Woodland Trust. If successful the trees will be delivered in November 2013.

The trees are to be planted around the Rhombus Garden opposite the Howwood Inn and volunteers are required to help with this task. If you can spare any time in November 2013 to help with this task please contact Christine Scarsbrook 01505 704083 .

You will need old clothes and if possible a dibber or other digging tool. All welcome to attend this event.

RHOMBUS GARDEN REFURBISHMENT

SOME OF YOU WILL HAVE NOTICED HAZARD TAPE AROUND THE RHOMBUS GARDEN IN LATE SUMMER. THIS WAS TO WARN PEOPLE OF CHEMICAL STRAYING IN AN ATTEMPT TO ERADICATE JAPANESE KNOTWEED.

Plans are afoot to refurbish the garden once the Knotweed has been eradicated. To this end Howwood Wildlife & Woodlands (HWW) applied to the Local Area Committee (LAC) for part funding for this project. Alas HWW were not wholly successful due to insufficient funds available to the LAC. HWW are looking at alternative funding sources and hope to plan the project during the winter months. The plans will include the erection of a bug hotel in the area.

If you would like to help with this project or can donate materials e.g. tubes, boxes, straw, bricks or old pallets for the bug hotel then get in touch with the group at the contact details below. It is hoped that younger members of the community will help with the building of the bug hotel and thereafter take an interest in the creepy crawlies attracted by the hotel. Further details will be available in the spring newsletter.

HWW also look after the Triangle, local walking routes and maintain the lovely planters at the entrances to the village. In addition HWW installed the planters in the railway station and organise their planting schemes.

If you are interested in general environmental issues in Howwood why not join the Management Committee of HWW and get involved. Meetings are last Monday monthly in the function room of the Railways Inn at 7:30 and you will be made most welcome. Alternatively come along to the AGM on Tuesday 8 October 2013 in the Village Hall at 7:30 and have a chat.
