HOLY WEEK

Holy Week is a week of danger, a week of fire. It appears to be just another week of days, but we believers always know that the time is measured differently than the world measures it. And this week the world around us watches and wonders as we pause often from usual activities to pray. We pray to express our belief, to offer thanks to God who risked everything for our sake.

In Holy week we should be silent often, pondering the mysteries and finding our place in the crowd, whether in the crowd of Palm Sunday, or at the foot of the Cross on Good Friday, or in the crowd of worshippers at our parish community during this week.

Holy Week is also a week of danger. The danger is twofold. For Jesus it was a troubled week. He knew so well the consequence of not escaping from the Garden of Olives when he had the chance. Danger lies in wait all around him, in soldiers and in friends. How could he even know friend from enemy. In each day’s readings we will hear of the increasing danger to Jesus and how he faced down his enemies and fear.

The Holy Week is also dangerous because of what it does to us. It changes us. Holy Week finds us in church more often than usual or any suitable place. What would your boss, parents and friends think if they could read your mind as you ponder the mysteries of this week? As Lent ends, it is dangerous for other to see the witness of how much you might have changed and continue to change because of this week

Finally, Holy Week is a week of fire. It burns in our souls, yearning for God. It is a fire of an early Pentecost, warming our faith to new levels. It is a fire that purifies, as we hear the Passion account of the gospels and measure our lives against the life of Jesus. It is the fire of the Easter candle, that single flame brought into the church that brightens the building and the hearts of all believers, the same flame of faith that enables us to look into the tomb and to see that it is empty because Jesus fills our souls with his Resurrection presence.
