HOUSTON HOSPICE OFFERS UNIQUE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers help set the tone for the compassionate care that patients and families experience with Houston Hospice. An integral part of the Houston Hospice team, volunteers serve patients and families with caring expertise in the inpatient unit located at Houston Hospice’s Medical Center location, in patients' homes and in nursing homes.

A Message from Houston Hospice CEO, Jim Faucett

Sometimes I meet someone who is not familiar with our hospice and they will ask me why Houston Hospice is the best.At that point I can begin a list of reasons, but I truly believe that our volunteer program is one of the essential elements of Houston Hospice that makes the quality of care exceptional. We are blessed to have loyal and caring volunteers who make a difference in the lives of our patients and families.

Volunteers are invaluable to the Houston Hospice Program. They contribute their time and talents in two different capacities:

Patient Care Volunteers
Volunteers work with hospice patients and families in the inpatient unit, in patients' homes and in nursing homes. These include, but are not limited to, sitting with patients, translating, making phone calls and running errands. Volunteers interested in direct patient and family assistance complete 25hours of volunteer training.
Non-Patient Care Volunteers
Volunteers may choose to serve in indirect, non-patient assistance efforts. These services include, but are not limited to office help, participating in fundraising events and representing Houston Hospice at health fairs. Non-patient volunteers attend an abbreviated volunteer training course.

The Houston Hospice Volunteer Experience

One Houston Hospice volunteer received the following compliment from a patient after her first visit: “I knew I was going to have a blessed day when you walked into the room.”

While visiting an elderly gentleman in an extended care facility, another Houston Hospice volunteer was preparing to leave when the gentleman thanked her for coming with the courtly and refreshing manners of the elderly. He then added, “You are a nice person and appropriately dressed”. The volunteer loved it!
