UK's School of Human Environmental Sciences Co-sponsors Marriage Workshops

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 25, 2007) − The Bluegrass Healthy Marriage Initiativewill hold the first of its quarterly marriage education workshops on Saturday, June 16, at the William T. Young Library on the University of Kentucky campus.

The workshop will feature the Mastering the Magic of Love Relationship Enhancement® program and will be presented by licensed marriage and family therapistMary Ortwein, executive director of IDEALS of Kentucky and author of the program. Space is limited to 25 couples, so pre-registration is required.

"This relationship skills program for couples is very well regarded," according to Erik Carlton, project director of the Bluegrass Healthy Marriage Initiative (BHMI), part of a collaborative initiative between the School of HumanEnvironmental Sciences (HES) in the University of Kentucky's College ofAgriculture and the Bluegrass Healthy Marriages Partnership (BHMP).

Funding for the initiative was awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

"BHMI is rooted in the conclusions of family social science which has found that, on average, children do significantly better in practically every aspect of life when their parents remain together in a non-high conflict marriage," said Carlton.

"This program is an example of the School of Human Environmental Sciences working to improve the well-being of children and families, and helping parents provide increased emotional and financial support for their children," said Ann Vail, director of HES.

Mastering the Magic utilizes a step-by-step approach for learning relationship enhancement skills and assists couples in working through core problems via extended couple dialogues. The program, which runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on June 16, teaches couples tools to make problem solutions last.

All participants will be asked to complete a brief research survey.

The $10 per couple/$5 per individual cost covers materials attendees get to keep and some light snacks. Parking is free. More information on BHMI is available at Registration questions should be directed to Cristyn White at 257-5527 .
