Applications are sought from enthusiastic and motivated candidates for a part time (5 PA) Consultant post in Older Person’s Psychiatry.

The post-holder will be responsible for inpatient care, in Leverndale Hospital Glasgow, for patients over 65 who live in the CamGlen area of South Lanarkshire. A community consultant will look after these patients in the community. Half a session is offered for managing a complex clinical care ward and a further half session to join the group of Consultants providing ECT in the South GG&C area. There are currently seven consultants in Older Person’s Psychiatry in South Glasgow (4 full time and 3 part-time) and collectively they are an enthusiastic and supportive team.

Applicants must have full GMC registration, a licence to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register for Old Age Psychiatry. Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT or CESR(CP) at the time of interview for the post

This post carries a responsibility for On Call at a frequency of approximately 1 in 30.

Job Description

1.  Elderly Mental Health Service

Mental Health Services for Older People in Greater Glasgow and Clyde are currently delivered by multidisciplinary, consultant led teams, each serving an elderly population of approximately 10,000 (for a full time consultant). Assessment beds for both functional and organic mental illness are located on Stobhill, Gartnavel Royal, Leverndale the Royal Alexandra and Inverclyde Royal Hospitals.

A Clinical Director for the Old Age Psychiatry Services who takes a strategic overview of the whole service.

All community services within Greater Glasgow and Clyde are now re-organised into CHSCPs

The successful candidate will provide in-patient care to the over 65 population of the CamGlen area of South Lanarkshire. This is a population of aproximately 10000 patients. The post holder will also provide the medical input to the Complex Care Uniit (currently situated at Rodgerpark Nursing Home) and the ECT Department in Leverndale Hospital along with two other Consultants. This latter usually involves attendance at ECT on a fortnightly basis.

2. Clinical Services

Inpatient Services – South Glasgow

Acute inpatient services are provided at Leverndale Hospital and consists of 38 admission beds. These are situated in 2 assessment wards; 1 for elderly people with functional illness and 1 for assessment of people with dementia. Intermediate Care is provided on two partnership sites in South Glasgow

Community Mental Health Teams

There is no community role for the post holder..

Links with Acute Hospitals

There are liaison services to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Liaison Services are supported by Specialist Nurse Practitioners The post holder would have no formal input to Liaison Services but may be called on to give assistance to Nursing Staff in the event of the usual Liaison Consultant being on annual leave. The Elderly Mental Health service is actively engaging with the Directorates of Medicine for the Elderly in looking at more active joint working between the Departments. Laboratory, X-ray and scanning facilities are provided in the Acute Hospitals

2.  Supporting Staff

The post is supported by junior medical staff.

Nursing

The inpatient wards, both acute and intermediate care, are staffed by an excellent and highly experienced skill mix of nurses where the abilities of nurses, trained and untrained, are viewed in the highest regard.

Allied Health Professions

There is a OT and physiotherapy input to the wards. There is access to Podiatry, Dietetic services, Dental and Speech and language therapy.

Administration and Clerical

The post will have secretarial and administration support.

Psychology

There is currently no formal psychology input into the wards.

3.  Service Developments

Liaison services to acute hospitals throughout Glasgow and to care homes have been developed in the past two years.

4. Management and Committee Work

The post holder will be members of local Divisions of Psychiatry and the Glasgow Division of Old Age Psychiatry. Medical Management is through Sector Management structures.

5. Duties of the Post

This job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director. NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde initially allocates all full time consultants 10 PAs made up of 9 PAs in Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and one core Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) for CPD, clinical governance, appraisal, revalidation, job planning, internal routine communication and management meetings. The precise allocation of SPA time and associate objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed at annual job planning.

In terms of sessional commitment, this is envisaged to be roughly as follows:

The successful consultant will take part pro rata in the South Glasgow and Clyde On Call rota 1 in 30 at present.

5. Teaching

a)  Undergraduate

There is undergraduate teaching carried out during, at present, two terms of the academic year and students are attached from Glasgow University.

b)  Postgraduate

The post holder will participate in local Postgraduate Training Scheme in Psychiatry. These schemes are fully accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. As well as the educational supervision of the attached trainee(s), the post holder will participate in the educational programme of journal clubs and case conferences in West Glasgow as well as providing input to the West of Scotland Postgraduate Education Programme in Psychiatry.

c) Continued Professional Development

CPD has a high profile in Glasgow Psychiatry and a regular programme of activities has been organised. The post holder will be strongly encouraged to make use of these.

Research

Glasgow and Clyde Mental Health Services for the Elderly have an excellent track record of clinical research.

Clinical Audit

The Mental Health Division is particularly keen on clinical audit that establishes effectiveness of interventions.

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
