Applicants must have MRCP, full GMC registration and a licence to practise. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT in Cardiology or eligibility for specialist registration (CESR) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of Interview. You should have extensive training in general cardiology and an interest in Inherited Cardiac Conditions. Non UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

The QueenElizabethUniversityHospital is a new purpose built hospital that opened its doors in May 2015. The hospital has 1109 beds and will provide medical care to a population of around 700000 people in west and south Glasgow.The hospital provides the full range of medical and surgical services including many tertiary specialties including neurology, ENT and renal medicine. It is also be one of the 4 hospitals in Scotland to admit major trauma cases from next year.

We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s three universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Research also has a high profile within the organisation. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the WolfsonMedicalSchool, based at GlasgowUniversity.

The Work of the Cardiology Department

The coronary care unit which is located on the critical care floor of the QEUH. It comprises 20 high care beds with facility for invasive monitoring , temporary pacing and non invasive ventilator support. Monday-Friday Consultant cover is provided on site 8am-8pm by one Consultant who is supported by a Cardiology SpR and other trainees. The Cardiology wards (6c and 6d) consists of 46 beds located on the 6th floor. These are staffed Monday-Friday by one Cardiology Consultant supported by a Cardiology SpR, other trainees and two Advanced Nurse practitioners. When on CCU or the Cardiology wards all other clinical commitments are cancelled.

The Cardiology department (clinic F) provides a full range of Cardiology investigations including trans-thoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, tilt testing, exercise stress testing and pacemaker follow up. Permanent pacing and insertion of implantable loop recorders is undertaken by a team of three Cardiologists. Myocardial perfusion imaging is also available on site.

There is a new teaching and research centre and purpose built office accommodation. The hospital has been fully operational since June 2015.

A general Cardiology clinic will be located at the Western Ambulatory Care Hospital (ACH) is located in the West End of Glasgow, with Cardiology investigations available on the day of the clinic. The Cardiology department is able to perform out-patient trans-thoracic echocardiography, treadmill exercise testing, stress echocardiography, ambulatory ECG monitoring and Ambulatory BP monitoring. The department also provides follow up clinicsfor pacemaker and ICD patients and doctor led rapid access chest pain clincs and nurse led Heart Failure clinics.

The inherited Cardiac Conditions clinics take place on the QEUH site with full imaging support and input from the genetics department.

All cardiothoracic surgery and interventional cardiology is carried out at the West of Scotland Heart and Lung Centre in the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Clydebank on the outskirts of Glasgow. This is a dedicated regional unit for interventional cardiology including primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In 2009 the hospital carried out approximately 2600 PCI procedures (including 700 PPCI’s), 400 device implants (CRT and ICD) and 350 electrophysiology interventions.

It is expected that 4.5 programmed activities per week will be devoted to direct clinical care, with 0.5 programmed activity allocated for supporting professional activities. The successful applicant will be encouraged to become involved with the teaching of undergraduates and postgraduate

Trainees of all grades from FY1 to CMT 2 are attached to the unit. In addition 5 or 6 specialist registrars in training Cardiology are attached to the unit.

Details of the Post

This is a new post and the successful candidate will be expected to provide a range of consultant services as agreed with colleagues. The week day commitment to the Cardiology wards 1 week in 22.

It is expected that the successful candidate will provide one General Cardiology clinics per week at the Western ACH and two sessions for the Inherited Cardiac Conditions clinic. In addition they will provide one session of imaging support for the Beatson Cancer centre and one session of general imaging ever second week.

Some flexibility in timing of sessions, taking into account Bank Holidays, prospective cover in colleagues’ absence, and occurrence of receiving ward rounds, will be required.

This job plan is negotiable and will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Director.This part time role initially with plans to expand the role as funding becomes available. The precise allocation of SPA time including involvement in audit, clinical governance, teaching, clinical research, internal routine communication and management meetings as well as appraisal, revalidation, job planning and associate objectives will be agreed with the successful applicant and will be reviewed and agreed upon at annual job planning.

d)Teaching, audit, and research:

The successful appointee will be able to play a full part in the teaching activities of the Cardiology department including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. There will be a commitment to ongoing clinical audit and opportunity for research.

e)Administration and management:

The post holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients and in the running of the department.

f)Qualifications:

Essential: CCT in Cardiology.

Desirable: Experience in Acute Medicine

New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.

SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
