Job Description
1.Introduction
Living & Working in Glasgow
Today Glasgow is a compact, vibrant and modern city. In fact Glasgow’s scale comes as a surprise to some people. It has the largest suburban rail network outside London and is second only to the UK Capital as a retail centre. There are top-ranking schools, excellent leisure facilities, beautiful golf courses and elegant accommodation across all price ranges. The night life and restaurants are renowned and its opera, theatres, art galleries and museums offer plenty of cultural stimulation.
From Glasgow, the West of Scotland’s jewels are within easy reach. Loch Lomond is just 45 minutes drive, a little further to the Argyll peninsula – or over the sea to Arran, Skye, Iona and Mull.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Acute Services Division
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland – offering many opportunities to ensure job satisfaction and career development. We provide a wide range of services from community-based care through to the full range of general hospital services.
A considerable volume of complex surgical work is carried out in units that provide the country’s tertiary and national services serving a population of approximately 1.1 million people. Our patients not only come from Glasgow but also, in some instances, from the whole of the West of Scotland and for our National Services, from the whole of Scotland. We enjoy close links with Glasgow’s 3 universities and make a significant contribution to teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. We provide excellent facilities for students and their tutors in the brand new £15 million state of the art Wolfson Medical School based at Glasgow University.
Currently, the south sector hospitals comprise the Southern General Hospital, the Victoria Infirmary, and the New Victoria Hospital ambulatory care centre based at the Victoria Infirmary site. North of the River Clyde, there are Glasgow Royal Infirmary (including the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital), Western Infirmary, Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital, Gartnavel General Hospital (including the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre), Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. Within Clyde the Royal Alexandra Hospital is in Paisley, Inverclyde Royal Hospital is in Greenock and the Vale of Leven District General Hospital is situated in Alexandria.
Changing Services
Health services across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are undergoing a radical transformation to meet the changing needs of the population. In 2015, the New South Glasgow Hospital will open at the Southern General site. This is a flagship Scottish Government project and will see the amalgamation of services from the Victoria Infirmary, Southern General Hospital, and Western Infirmary. It is anticipated that the new hospital will have a 20 bedded Intensive Care Unit.
In addition, the new Glasgow Paediatric Hospital will be collocated on site and this facility will work closely with the recently opened Maternity hospital. These plans will ensure that the New Southern General Hospital will be not only the largest hospital campus in Glasgow but one of the most modern and cutting edge locations for medical care in Scotland in the years ahead.
Hospitals where services are to be provided
A single Theatres and Anaesthetics Service manages the clinical service throughout Glasgow. In addition to anaesthesia itself, the Service is responsible for the management of the operating theatres, intensive care and high dependency care, day surgery and acute and chronic pain services.
Inverclyde Royal Hospital
Inverclyde Royal Hospital is a District General Hospital situated in Greenock overlooking the Clyde Estuary. The hospital serves the local area including outlying islands of Bute and Cumbrae as well as the Cowal Peninsula. Services include Accident and Emergency, ENT, General Surgery, Obstetrics (delivery numbers approx 6000 births per annum), Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Urology, Neonatal Paediatrics, General Medicine,(including sub-specialties), Dermatology, Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitation and Day Services), Physically Disabled Rehabilitation and Continuing Care. Support services include a six bedded Intensive Care Unit for both medical and surgical patients plus a 6 bedded surgical High Dependency Unit.
The Victoria Infirmary
The Victoria Infirmary is a teaching hospital with an acute operational bed complement of approximately 350 beds. The hospital is situated in the south-east of Glasgow providing a range of high quality health care services including Accident and Emergency, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, General Medicine (including sub-specialties), Medicine for the Elderly (including Assessment, Rehabilitation and Day Services), and a wide range of Outpatient clinics.
There is a busy six bedded Intensive Care Unit for both medical and surgical patients plus a surgical High Dependency Unit.
New Victoria (Ambulatory Care) Hospital.
The New Victoria Hospital opened in June 2009 and has an eight theatre suite with a generous supporting recovery area. The services using the theatre facilities include general surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, gynaecology, urology, ENT, oral surgery and chronic pain services. The theatre sessions are composed of patients having mainly minor operative procedures but surgical complexity is increasing as the facility develops. In addition there will be a 12 bedded 23 hour stay unit which is open during the week.
The pain service provides out-patient clinics and day surgery treatments supported by the multi-disciplinary team of Physiotherapists, Clinical Psychologists and Clinical Nurse Specialists. Pain management in Glasgow also has an Intrathecal Drug Delivery Service at the Beatson Oncology unit, a Pain Management Programme based at the Anvil Centre in the East End and a Spinal Cord Stimulator Service.
The Institute of Neurological Sciences
ENT services are covered at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, based on the Southern General site. The Institute is equipped with 2 Magnetic Resonance Imaging suites, SPECT scanner, 2 Computerised Axial Tomography Scanners and angiography facilities. The Institute also provides Neurosurgical and Oral Maxillofacial Services.
University Links
Both the Southern General and Victoria Infirmary Hospitals have built a sound academic and research base over the years and have an excellent teaching reputation with libraries and lecture suites with comprehensive audiovisual facilities on both sites. There are close links with the University of Glasgow Anaesthesia and Critical Care Department.
Chronic Pain Service
There has been great expansion of the Chronic Pain Service in Glasgow over recent years. This is currently provided within two larger pain units within the new Glasgow Ambulatory Care Units north and south of the river with retention of a chronic pain service at Inverclyde Royal Hospital. Consultant sessions consist of out-patient clinics, day surgery theatre sessions and a major input to multidisciplinary working. The multidisciplinary pain team includes Physiotherapists, Clinical Psychologists and Clinical Nurse Specialists with associated administrative support. There is funding in place for a regional Managed Clinical network in chronic pain in the West of Scotland, initially for two years, with the hope that this will act as a model that will be rolled out to other regions in Scotland.
The Greater Glasgow& Clyde Pain Management Programme (GG&C PMP) is based at a separate site and takes referrals from the pain services in Glasgow and Clyde. This multidisciplinary CBT (cognitive behavioural) programmme has been running for the last 5 years and there are strong links with the service. Glasgow has also been chosen as the site for the Scottish Residential Pain Management Programme which will run in parallel with the GG&C PMP. There is a specific Interventional cancer pain service running at the Beatson Oncology Unit. The responsibility for the Spinal Cord Stimulation service is based with the service at New Victoria ACH.
As well as providing outpatient clinics and theatre services for management of chronic pain the service accepts in-patient referrals to the service. This entails liaison with the Clinical Nurse Specialists, and colleagues in ward based specialties.

4. The post
The postholder will have sessions at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, the Southern General Hospital, Victoria Infirmary and the New Victoria Hospitals. The post will be 10 session post. A split of 9:1 between direct clinical care PAs and supporting professional activities is now the advertised standard for all new consultant job plans in NHSGG&C. The one SPA minimum will reflect activity such as appraisal, personal audit and professional development occurring outside study leave time. Once the candidate has been appointed more SPA time may be agreed for activities such as undergraduate and postgraduate medical training which takes place outside direct clinical care, as well as research and/or management. These activities must be specifically and clearly identified and be agreed with the candidate and desired by the department.
On call will be based at the Victoria Infirmary. As with established Consultants in Glasgow, job plan negotiation will take place once appointed, under the new Terms and Conditions of the New Consultant Contract. The newly appointed Consultants may be offered EPA activity. There are established agreements across NHSGG & Clyde concerning the flexibility of SPAs within the new contract, which would be applied to any new appointment. The post holder will be expected to work flexibly to maintain their range of anaesthetic skills and this will include work within general theatres and obstetric anaesthesia.
