Course scope and objectives
MIS is a 3 credit hours IT college obligatory course intended to familiarize students with some of the problems and opportunities associated with managing organizations and how information systems and modern information technologies can provide modern management with business solutions to keep up with technology CHANGE and manage performance. The learner is expected to understand and appreciate the revolution in businesses caused by the internet and its related technologies and its abundant offerings.
Learner must develop a solid understanding to apply IT and managerial concepts to solve business problems. This course can be divided into two major parts to demonstrate how IS and IT are essential ingredients for the success of today’s Inter-networked business enterprise by placing major emphasis on the following strategic role of IT in:
· Revitalizing business process and operations.
· Improving managerial decision making process.
· Gaining and sustaining competitive advantages.
· Solving modern-day business problems.
· Maximum utilization of business opportunities.
Part I.
Part one is intended to improve your competence and your theoretical frame of reference in fundamental managerial principles, concepts, theories and ideas in relation to organizations, management, information systems and the Networked Enterprise.
Part II.
In Part two focuses on applying acquired competences gained in the theoretical part 1 and will provide the learners the chance to build awareness and solid comprehension on major fundamental IT infrastructure within the enterprise
Instruction Methodology
Based on the principle of “Learning by Doing”, we will try to adopt the constructionist methodology and learner centered approach of instruction in an interactive learning environment.
This course, will provide the learners with the opportunity to develop knowledge and will stress on the fact that “The learner is responsible for his own learning”, therefore the learners are encourages to change their learning attitudes to develop skills to diagnose and solve their educational problems. To this end, we believe that, the use of student learning portfolio is appropriate for the students to reflect on their learning, therefore; it is required by all students to demonstrate their learning progress. The work on the portfolio will be part of the learner’s final grade, as an additional assessment tool.
A Learning Portfolio/ Learning Journal: is simply a tool intended to helps learners to reflect and document all their skills and constructed meanings acquired through his learning experiences also to present his accomplishments, in another words, “a purposeful collection of student work that exhibits the student’s efforts and progress and provide an evidence of the knowledge a learner has actually achieved and the application of the acquired knowledge during a certain period of time and in an area of study.
Course delivery:
This course will be delivered in an e-enabled approach (mixing) traditional F2F and e-Learning method of teaching and learning using wikispaces as The Learning or Content Management System (LMS), http://mis-11e.wikispaces.com/ where most of the course web activity will take place like email, chat, forums and on-line materials. Wikispaces can provide all students with the opportunity to maintain interaction with the instructor and can benefit from interacting with other students as a platform to collaborate with team members and work ON-LINE.
More over the student need to visit the companion website of Laudon’s MIS 9th edition to interact with web based materials and on-line test at www.prenhall.com/laudon.
