Dear Pre-K Parents,

This week we have focused on Nursery Rhymes for our small group objectives. I am sure many of you have shared your favorite Nursery Rhymes with your child at home. Nursery Rhymes are an easy introduction to poetry, rhyming words, colors, positions, and counting. We have enjoyed the following activities:

*acted out various nursery rhymes

*constructed our own wall, for our own Humpty Dumpty

*created our own spider

*modified Jack Be Nimble so we could jump, hop, gallop, and tiptoe over the candlestick

*listened for and identified rhyming words

*answered who and what questions

*named the main characters and settings in each rhyme

Use the printed Nursery Rhymes from throughout the week to expose or reinforce the tracking technique. As you read, point to the words with your finger, using a sweeping motion. This top to bottom, left to right tracking technique is as essential pre-reading skill. Model this technique often for your child to observe.

Below are some home activities for Humpty Dumpty:

1)  Let your child help you crack eggs open to make scrambled eggs. Yum!

2)  Make a hard-boiled egg for a snack. Have your child decorate the egg with markers. Say the rhyme, then allow him/her to crack the egg, peel, and eat. Have your child try to put their eggshell back together.

3)  Try to make words that rhyme with:

sat wall hill man king
