Guidelines for Healthy Choices at Yamhill County Health and Human Services Meetings and Events

When food and beverages are provided at Yamhill County Health and Human Services meetings and events, whether purchased from a caterer, local grocery store, or a big box store, it is requiredto include food and beverages that meet the followingnutrition guidelines.

Consider not offering food at mid-morning or mid-afternoon meetings or events

  • Mid-morning and mid-afternoon food is not necessary
  • Consider offering only water, coffee or tea
  • If it is decided to provide food, offer only fruits, vegetables and/or other healthy foods

Meals and Snacks

  • Serve healthy (small to moderate) portions or half portions
  • Emphasize fruits and vegetables such as salads, whole fruit or fresh or cooked vegetables
  • Emphasize whole grains when possible, includingbreads, pasta, muffins, granola bars, etc.
  • Provide nonfat or low fat dairy products including yogurts, cheeses and milk
  • When providing dressings, dips and toppings, select fat-free, low-fat, or low-calorie options
  • Include lean protein such as skinless poultry, fish, beans, and tofu, eggs, nuts or seeds
  • Remember to always include a vegetarian option
  • Select food with no trans fat, and low in saturated fat, sodium and added sugar
  • Choose food that is prepared by grilling, baking, or sautéing with healthy fats
  • When providing desserts, offer small portion sizes and low-fat or low calorie options

Beverages

  • Water should always be included, preferably served in bulk containers such as pitchers rather than individual bottles
  • Other healthier beverage choices include:
  • Non-caloric beverages such as coffee and/or tea
  • Carbonated water or iced teas, flavored or unflavored, with no added sweeteners
  • Nonfat or 1% milk or dairy-free alternative (soy, rice, lactaid)
  • 100% fruit and vegetable juice, 6-8 ounces or less per serving
