Connecting to the Augusta University VPN Portal

Augusta University requires that anyone with a VPN account use Multifactor Authentication (MFA). MFA is a two-step authorization process which requires that the User not only login with their credentials but also reply to a message sent via text1 to a cell.

Note – Internet Explorer runs all websites by default in “Protected Mode” which does not allow them to automatically push software to your PC. These instructions will walk you through adding the Augusta University VPN portal to your “Trusted Sites” which will allow the automatic software installation. If you are unable to add the AU VPN portal to your “Trusted Sites”, or it is against your corporate policy, there are instructions for manual installation included at the end of this document.

Adding to “Trusted Sites” and allowing automatic installation –

Step 1 – Open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools, then Internet Options.

Step 2 – Click the Security tab, choose Trusted sites, and click the “Sites” button.

Step 3 – Add to your list of trusted websites. Then click close, then ok to return to your Internet Explorer window.

Step 4 – Browse to When prompted, enter your Georgia Regents provided Active Directory credentials. If you are not sure what your username and password are, please call the Georgia Regents helpdesk at 706-721-7500.

Step 5 – Replay to the text message as indicated on your cell phone

Step 6 – Review and accept the Terms and Conditions

The client installation will now begin. You will see the software download and install itself without any intervention from you. Click the “Install” button at the bottom of your browser window if you are prompted.

Once you reach the screen that tells you the “Connection has been Established” you can close Internet Explorer and launch your applications normally. The VPN connection can be controlled from the lock icon in your taskbar, as is circled in red below.

Manual installation method -

Step 1 - Open Internet Explorer and browse to When prompted, enter your Augusta University Active Directory credentials. If you are not sure what your username and password are, please call the AU helpdesk at 706-721-7500.

Step 2 – Reply to the MFA text message as indicated on your cell phone

Step 3 – Review and accept the Terms and Conditions

You will see the installation attempt to begin, but then Windows will prompt you with the following error message:

Step 4– Click “OK” to close that error box and you will be returned to the following screen. Click the “Download” button in the bottom right corner.

Step 5– Click the hyperlink for “Windows 7/Vista/64/XP

Step 6 – Choose to “Run” the installation.

Step 7 – Follow the instructions of the installer accepting all defaults. The entire installation process should take about 1-2 minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection. Once the installation is complete you will be returned to the following “Manual Installation” page inside of Internet Explorer.

Step 8 – Click the “Retry” hyperlink, the software will now detect that it has already been installed and you will be connected to the Georgia Regents network.

Once you reach the screen that tells you the “Connection has been Established” you can close Internet Explorer and launch your applications normally. The VPN connection can be controlled from the lock icon in your taskbar, as is circled in red below.

All subsequent connections will only require you to log in to the page from within Internet Explorer. The client only needs to be installed once.
