Top marks again: med.Logistica continues its success story

Major rendezvous for hospital logistics networking now firmly established

On 17 and 18 May 2017, 900 [2015: 750] participants met up at the largest platform for innovation in hospital logistics in the German-speaking world. Med.Logistica brought together decision-makers from hospitals, clinics and other representatives of the healthcare economy, to discuss future developments and ways of optimising processes and procedures in the everyday work of the hospital. Experts from Germany, Denmark, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland presented examples of best practice in modern hospital logistics. Participating companies (80 exhibitors from 7 countries) all declared themselves very satisfied with the event.

“The last two days have shown that med.Logistica is now clearly established as the major sector platform in the German-speaking world,” explains Martin Buhl-Wagner, Chief Executive Officer of LeipzigerMesse GmbH. “For it is here that the decision-makers meet to discuss the latest projects and debate ideas for the hospital of the future. Nowhere else is it possible to network in more ideal conditions than at this must-attend event, covering the whole gamut of hospital logistics”

With 900 participants, med.Logistica this year recorded an increase of 20 percent and thus continues its success story. The dedicated exhibition, with its 80 exhibitors from 7 countries, grew in floor space from 1,300 to 1,800 square metres, representing an increase of 38 percent.

“We covered the entire gamut of hospital logistics,” reports Project Director Ronald Beyer with some pleasure. Accordingly, this year, not only were many hospitals with more than 500 beds represented, but there was an increased presence of small and medium-sized institutions.

Focus on networking

This year’s event focused on innovative approaches to and solutions for everything ranging from the planning of buildings to procurement, operating theatre management and waste disposal, as well as being, centrally, about sharing experiences of practical situations.

Lutz Hüther, Director of Logistics at the Marienhospital in Stuttgart, described med.Logistica as an outstanding base for networking between manufacturers and hospitals, including, in particular, those in charge of hospital logistics. The impression of Jens Kellner, Head of Logistics at the University Hospital in Frankfurt, also confirmed the notion that Germany’s entire expertise in hospital logistics was assembled in Leipzig.

Tobias Dreier, who, amongst other things, is Head of Logistics and Materials at Helios and has been a participant since the first event in 2011, particularly likes the networking opportunities: “You come into close contact with colleagues from the entire market here and get to talk about lots of issues, which you are then able to benefit from in the next couple of years.”

Hans-Jürgen Bethge is an architect and Head of the Facility Management in the Protestant Hospital in Oldenbury, where they are currently working on extending the operating theatres, the intensive care ward and the accident and emergency unit. He takes advantage of med.Logistica to find optimum solutions for his concepts and designs. Summing the event up, he observes: “There’s nothing to compare with it!”

Bettina Palm, Deputy Head of Operating Theatres in the Ortenau Hospital, Lahr-Ettenheim, called it an “aid for technical innovation”. “If you want to optimise processes, have the money available and have the ability to get things moving, then you really should come here. There is a variety of suppliers and people, who have already got projects off the ground, and you really can find someone who can help you achieve what you want to do.”

“As logistics become ever more important for the health service, med.Logistica, too, continues to grow. For it is here that heads of logistics departments and those of the commercial and business world get to discuss things. And they know, that if the hospital logistics are working well, that is of significant advantage to the patients.Greater efficiency, better quality and greater patient satisfaction are the objectives for the optimisation of process streams. And these can all be achieved more effectively with the help of med.Logistica,” explains Ronald Beyer.

Lars Johow, Executive and Authorised Signatory for the Dynamed Company also confirms that “because of its special atmosphere, med.Logistica is, for us, one of the logistics highlights of the year. At this, the sector’s ‘school reunion’, it’s not competition that’s in the forefront of people’s minds, but networking.” Equally, he sees the event as the most important platform for the whole gamut of hospital logistics – and that the development is on-going. “The growth of med.Logistica clearly shows that the importance of logistics is continuing to increase.”

First ‘LeipzigerPreisfürKrankenhauslogistik’ goes to Austria

For optimised processes leading to the best possible patient care: the ‘LeipzigerPreisfürKrankenhauslogistik’ (Leipzig Award for Hospital Logistics), which attracts a cash prize of € 6,000, was presented for the first time at med.Logistica. The winner is Michael Kazianschütz, MBA, MSc, Head of the Logistics Department at the LKH University Hospital Graz, for the “implementation of an overall logistics concept at the LKH University Hospital Graz, based on a supply chain operations reference (SCOR) model”. A distinguished panel of eight adjudicators, from the worlds of science, industry and practice, assessed 22 submissions from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. The additional young talents’ prize - and its endowment of €1,000 - for the best thesis was awarded to Benjamin Heyse of the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg for his Masters thesis on hospital logistics.

med.Logistica a success for industry

Exhibitors from the sector declared themselves to be very satisfied overall. “Committing oneself to med.Logistica is well worth it,” emphasises Marcel Dieck, Director of Project Management at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics. “Some interesting networks have been established here over the last few years. Hospital logistics have found a voice at med.Logistica, and that is why we shall definitely be here again next time.”

“Med.Logistica is a must-attend event for anyone involved in hospital logistics and has shown positive growth this year,” insists Andreas Drost, CEO/CTO of MT Robot. “Hospitals are giving ever more thought to the optimisation of process streams and to launching into the era of Hospital 4.0 – all these issues are reflected at med.Logistica. Leipzig played host to many of the sector’s movers and shakers, its pioneers and achievers.”

Susanne Sollwedel, Senior Consultant at Hospital Partners, with special responsibility for project controlling, was particularly pleased with the high quality of specialist representation: “med.Logistica fulfilled all our expectations. And we met all of the target group that we expected to. The event has got bigger and has also, we feel, taken a qualitative leap forward. Not least, perhaps, because we met many of our customers responsible for strategic project management.” Stephan A. Richtzenhain, Managing Partner of SITEX, also attested to the fact that everything of importance on the German hospital logistics scene was represented at the show.

5thLogistics Round-Table Discussion Group: now a firm fixture of the complementary programme

The ‘Logistics Round-Table Discussion Group’, which took place on the eve of med.Logistica, was again very well received this year. Logistics directors from hospitals throughout Germany took advantage of the opportunity to foster contacts with specialist colleagues from other hospitals and clinics and to exchange ideas and experiences. The sixth meeting of the Logistics Discussion Group will be held in the interim year, in May 2018.

The next med.Logistica will take place on 05 and 06 June 2019.

The ‘LeipzigerPreisfürKrankenhauslogistik’

The ‘LeipzigerPreisfürKrankenhauslogistik’ (Leipzig Award for Hospital Logistics) is presented every two years at the med.Logistica Congress and Trade Exhibition for Hospital Logistics. The Award includes a cash prize of € 6,000 and recognises particularly innovative logistics projects in the healthcare sector. It was initiated by the joint Exhibitors’ and Programme Steering Committee of med.Logistica, together with LeipzigerMesse GmbH and awarded, for the first time, in 2017. Amongst the selection criteria are inventiveness, practical relevance, quantifiable usefulness, sustainability, multiplicative effect, economic and qualitative potential, as well as the contribution made to patient welfare and safety. The Young Talents’ Thesis Award is specifically aimed at new graduates. It recognises outstanding student theses relating to the optimisation of process streams in the health service and attracts a cash prize of € 1,000.
