1.Introduction

There are 12 University of Nottingham libraries. Opening hours vary between libraries, especially in the summer vacation, but up-to-date information can always be checked on the Information Services (IS) website at Telephone numbers and postal addresses for enquiries are given below for each of the libraries.

In all libraries, specialist help with subject enquiries is normally available Monday − Friday 9am−5pm only. These are the core times for use and when most staff are available at lending desks and subject service points.

Details of closing procedures are given either within the relevant section or in section 14 at the end of this guide.Any special access arrangements are included within the appropriate section.

2.Business Library

Situated on the top floor of the BusinessSchoolSouthBuilding at Jubilee Campus, the Business Library is ideally placed for students and staff of the BusinessSchool, within walking distance of Queen’s Medical Centre, and accessible via the Hopper Bus from University Park. The library predominantly houses stock to support the teaching, learning and research needs of the BusinessSchool and the Institute of Work, Health and Organisations.

There is a computer room in the nearby Djanogly Learning Resource Centre(DLRC).

3.Djanogly Learning Resource Centre

Situated centrally on Jubilee Campus, Djanogly Learning Resource Centre (DLRC) comprises a library and a 24 hour computer room. Holdings include books, periodicals and software materials to support courses and research in the Faculty of Education and the School of Computing Science. It is also the location for the Commonwealth Education Documentation Centre.

Entrance to the building is by University of Nottingham University Card/library card/visitor card

Individual visitors should report to the reception desk to complete an application form for a visitor card.

There is door access via the front entrance to building. A lift is available near the main entrance, and a wheelchair-accessible WC is located on the ground floor. Parking for people with disabilities is located at rear of The Exchange.

Computer room

The computer room is open 24/7, except for 15 minutes every day each side of library closing time (total of 30 minutes). The premises are cleared completely, and then access to the computer room is by University Card.

4.George Green Library of Science and Engineering

Centrally placed on the science site, this library contains the main collections of biological and pure sciences, engineering and psychology.A small collection ofchemistry reference material remains in the School of Chemistry, room C17. Please ask in the George Green Library for access to this material outside normal hours.

5.Greenfield Medical Library

From Queen’s Medical Centre:

Situated on floor A of the MedicalSchool, the library is easily accessible from University Park via the footbridge over Clifton Boulevard. It provides a service to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the University Hospital NHS Trust, together with other associated Trusts and University Departments. After 6.30pm on weekdays and all day on Saturday and Sunday, access to the library is via the stairway in the car park south of the MedicalSchool block, Queen’s Medical Centre. People in wheelchairs who would like to use the library during these times are asked to notify staff in advance of their visit, so that access arrangements can be made.

6.Hallward Library

In a central position on University Park, this is the largest of the libraries and covers material on arts, law and social sciences. The European Documentation Centre (EDC) is also in this building.

Located on the Sutton Bonington Campus, 12 miles from University Park, the library contains material on applied biosciences and veterinary science and medicine. Evening and Saturday hours may vary slightly, particularly in the summer vacation — please phone to check before you travel.

8.Manuscripts and Special Collections

The department holds extensive collections of local estate, literary and institutional archives, together with special collections of rare books. The East Midlands Collection is the only open-access collection held.

Readers of closed access collections are individually registered on their first visit, and are encouraged to seek the advice of staff about the research holdings. Advance appointments are recommended.

9.The Denis Arnold Music Library

Located in the north end of the Arts Centre next to the School of Music, the library’s holdings include books, periodicals, an extensive collection of musical scores and a departmental sound recordings collection covering classical, ethnic and 20th century classical music. LPs and CDs may not be borrowed, but listening and recording facilities are available. There may be some variation in opening hours — please phone to check before you travel.

10.School of Nursing Library, Derby Education Centre

This is centrally placed in the School of Nursing building in the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary grounds. The library contains books and periodicals on nursing, sociology, psychology and health.

After 5pm on Tuesday and all day on Saturday, students will need to have their University Card for door access. Non-cardholders will need to obtain a door access card at a cost of £5.00 (refundable on surrender of the card).

The library is on the 1st and mezzanine floors. There is no lift available, therefore we regretthe library is not accessible to people in wheelchairs. However, staff will be happy to help collect books for you. Please call ahead to make arrangements.

11.School of Nursing Library, Mansfield Education Centre

This library is located on the 2nd floor of the Dukeries Centre at the King’s Mill site, and stocks primarily nursing and midwifery material.

12.Shakespeare Street Learning Resource Centre

The Shakespeare Street Learning Resource Centre (SSLRC) is located on the ground floorand lowerground floorof the Adult Education Centre on Shakespeare Street in the centre of Nottingham.SSLRC holdsresources in a variety of formatswhichcover a wide range of subjects, serving the courses run by the Centre for Continuing Education.

Nine open access PCs are provided for the use of University of Nottingham students and staff. A login is needed.

We have one computer terminal which is available purely for searching The University of Nottingham Library Online Catalogue (UNLOC).

14.Closing procedures

To enable us to lock up library premises by their stated closing time, it is necessary to begin closing procedures beforethat time. Estimated times when services are closed are given below.

To warn you that the library is about to close, a bell is rung:

  • 30 minutes before closing the library — this gives you 30 minutes to borrow any material. Computer areas will close, so please save your work and log out.
  • 20 minutes before closing the library —we will start to switch off other computers and photocopiers.
  • 10 minutes before closing the library — we will start to close the stock areas.

15.Services for readers with disabilities

Information Services (IS)guides

All IS guides are available online on the IS website: follow the links Support & Contacts>Guides, Publications & FAQs>Guides & Publications.

Alternative formats are available on request. Please ask at any lending desk or subject service point for assistance.

Students who come to the Hallward Library lending desk with a ‘Books on Prescription’ (BOP) note prescribing a book will be entitled to have up to two books from the service. The BOP note is made out by a doctor at Cripps Health Centre or by the Counselling Service.

Students with an Access Card for library use provided by Academic Support can have up to 10 books saved for them for up to two working days. The service is available at all University of Nottinghamlibraries.

You can also ask at subject service points for additional assistance and for specific guides designed to suit your needs.

Remote access to the library online catalogue (UNLOC)

Self service renewal of loans and telephone renewals

Self service renewal of loans can be done on UNLOC.You can renew your books by telephone.However since this is not a standard service,except in the Greenfield Medical Library and at the Shakespeare Street LRC, please explain your circumstances.
